Position Summary
The Nursing Assistant performs specific responsibilities under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. Functions within the framework of the NAI listing granted by the NC Department of Health and Human Services. Practices within the philosophy and goals of patient care services. In addition, the Nursing Assistant may be utilized in the Observer Role responsible for monitoring one or more assigned patients on a designated unit for a specified time period.

attends staff development programs and educational resources to meet unit or individual objectives, fulfills annual mandatory educational requirements, participates in orientation of new staff and students as delegated by the supervising RN. - Follows hospital and unit-based policies and procedures: provides quality patient care, maintains familiarity with job description and legal implications of role, maintains active NAI licensure/certification.
- Builds interpersonal relations and communications: listens and provides feedback, recognizes and intervenes in personal conflicts that may interfere with patient care or teamwork, works effectively with others and fosters communication and teamwork, seeks help and utilizes chain of command appropriately.
- Makes unit, department and hospital contributions: participates in unit goal setting and assists in cost‑effective use of equipment and supplies.
- Under supervision of the licensed nurse: assists with direct patient care and completes delegated skills and tasks as assigned by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
- Monitors the patient for signs of escalating behaviors, alerts nurse if the patient exhibits risk of harming self or others, maintains level of observation according to the patient’s plan of care, communicates effectively with the care team, documents accurately in the medical record, provides hazard surveillance and engages patient in distraction activities as needed.
- High School or GED (preferred) or higher.
- NAI listing with the NC Department of Health and Human Services is required.
- Current American Heart Association Heart Saver or higher certification is required.
- De‑escalation training (Non‑violent crisis intervention or other program adopted by ECU Health); if not current at time of hire must complete within 90 days and maintain.
