Job Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval — award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Compensation and Benefits

Licensing and Schedule

Job Duties
  • The NP is a licensed independent practitioner who provides evidence‑based care to a population of Veterans.
  • Primary focus is the independent clinical evaluation of Veterans through their panel, including prevention and self‑management to improve health outcomes.
  • Provide comprehensive primary care to male and female Veterans in an outpatient setting, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic diseases and ensuring up‑to‑date health maintenance.
  • Perform physical exams, formulate treatment plans, and engage in shared medical decision‑making.
  • Provide care in multiple modalities, including direct face‑to‑face care and virtual care through telephonic, video, secured messaging, and other platforms.
  • Order, interpret, and act on lab tests and diagnostic studies.
  • Prescribe pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic interventions and initiate referrals to specialty services.
  • Educate patients and families on health topics.
  • Collaborate with the Patient Aligned Care Team and administrative staff to provide timely, quality, coordinated care.
  • Participate in continuous medical education, including opioid prescribing and training to maintain women’s health primary care provider status.
  • May cover for other providers in clinic or other primary‑care clinics as needed.
Controlled Substances and Collaborative Practice Requirements
  • NPs prescribing controlled substances must meet North Carolina rules (NI 21 U.S.C. 801 et seq.) when practicing under an NC license.
  • NP will be required to have a collaborative practice agreement with a physician for prescribing controlled substances only; the agreement is embedded in NP's privileging forms.
  • DEA registration is a preferred qualification, even if the NP does not prescribe controlled substances.
  • The VA does not mandate that an NP obtain a North Carolina NP approval to practice.
  • If an NP maintains a license in a state requiring physician collaboration, the NP must comply with that state's regulations and secure an appropriate collaborator at the VA.
  • NPs maintaining a license in a Full Practice Authority state while working at the VA must abide by that state's board regulations.
  • It is the NP's responsibility to provide information about their state's practice act/regulation to VA members when requested.
