Position Overview

The recruitment is for two (2) UNC Police Officer position(s). By applying, you will be considered for both position(s): # and #. The main purpose of the UNC Police Officer position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff and visitors of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill through law enforcement and crime prevention. The selected candidate(s) will patrol campus and investigate complaints and violations of State laws and local ordinances using the Community Oriented Policing philosophy.

This person also develops and implements preventative patrol techniques and performs specialized duties to deter crime and promote effective safety and security practices.

Rank/Levels
  • Police Officer I:
    Entry-level with 0-2 years of experience in law enforcement. Must have completed North Carolina’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or have the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
  • Police Officer II
    :
    Fully functioning officer with two or more years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer. Must have completed NC’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and have at least a general certification from NC CJETSC.
  • Police Officer III
    :
    Veteran officer with four or more years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer. Must have completed NC’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and attained Intermediate Certification from NC CJETSC.
Minimum Education And Experience

Minimum of High School diploma or GED. At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers. Lateral hires who are already certified NC law enforcement officers and not first hired as a Police Officer Trainee may be assigned this classification conditional on successful completion of the field training program designated by the Agency Head.

Out-of-State lateral hires must be NC CJETSC certification eligible.

Required Qualifications , Competencies, And Experience

Candidate must be at least 20 years of age at time of appointment; possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License; pass an in-depth background investigation, which includes driver’s history and criminal history with no felony convictions, psychological testing, polygraph examination, drug screening, and physical.
