Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary

The main purpose of the UNC Police Officer position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill through law enforcement and crime prevention. The selected candidate(s) will patrol campus, investigate complaints and violations of state laws and local ordinances using the Community Oriented Policing philosophy, develop and implement preventative patrol techniques, and perform specialized duties to deter crime and promote effective safety and security practices.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

• Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
• Probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.
• Lateral hires who are already certified NC law‑enforcement officers and were not first hired as a Police Officer Trainee may be assigned this classification conditional on successful completion of the field training program designated by the Agency Head.
• Out‑of‑state lateral hires must be NC CJETSC certification eligible.

Required Qualifications , Competencies, and Experience

• Candidate must be at least 20 years of age at time of appointment; possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license; pass a comprehensive background investigation, psychological testing, polygraph examination, drug screening, and physical fitness test.
• Must successfully complete a three‑week department orientation course and a twelve‑week department field training program during the probationary period; must satisfactorily complete the state‑mandated probationary period.
• Must possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and interact professionally with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system.
• Position is classified as an ‘ESSENTIAL’ Emergency Duty Employee and may require reporting outside of the usual work schedule during adverse weather or other emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications , Competencies, and Experience

• Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited community college or university is strongly preferred.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements

Candidate must meet the physical and psychological requirements of the NC Criminal Justice Education and Standards Commission, including a physical exam, psychological exam, drug test, and polygraph examination. Duties include being able to subdue resisting suspects, effect forcible arrests, defend oneself, operate a law‑enforcement vehicle under emergency conditions during day and night, pursue fleeing suspects, perform searches of people and buildings, exercise independent judgment in use of force, endure verbal and mental abuse, comprehend legal documents, and command emergency personnel during accidents, emergencies, and disasters.

Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. The officer will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual Clery training.
