General Statement or Primary Purpose
Under general supervision, operates a heavy truck used in the transfer of refuse and debris from collection sites to the County Landfill. Work involves manipulating heavy trucks over local roads with considerable skill and constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents. The employee is responsible for cleaning and performing maintenance of the assigned truck and reports to the Transfer Station Supervisor.
Dutiesand Responsibilities or Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Operates a heavy truck to transfer refuse and debris from container sites to the County landfill; manipulates levers inside the cab of the truck to load and dump refuse.
- Operates the truck to haul recyclable materials from convenience centers to recycling stations.
- Cleans assigned trucks used in daily refuse collections and transfer, and assists in truck maintenance.
- Maintains records of mileage, fuel usage, and number of loads hauled to the landfill and prepares periodic reports for submission to the supervisor.
- Reports violations of sanitation ordinances, as necessary.
Operating and maintaining motorized heavy equipment used in the disposal of refuse at the County Transfer Station. Work involves operating and/or training in the use of compactors, bulldozers, front‑end loaders, graders, and backhoes to push debris into a compactor or trailer.
Minimum Education and Experience- Graduation from high school, and one year of experience in the operation of dual‑axial or heavy‑load capacity trucks; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Possession of a valid Class B commercial driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.
- Possession of a valid Class A commercial driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina, required for operation of a tractor‑trailer.
