Advanced Practice Provider

The Staff or Senior Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner and a member of the care delivery team. The APP sets standards for the level and quality of care, has responsibility, authority, and accountability for the provision of care through supervision by and collaboration with a physician, and manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families.

The role encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision, establishing and maintaining relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients, and families to achieve desired outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The APP demonstrates a commitment to community and to the healthcare profession.

Responsibilities
  • Apply basic professional practice knowledge and skills appropriate for the practice setting. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in documentation, and demonstrate critical thinking in all areas of professional practice. Learn to incorporate acceptable standards of practice as well as business unit and health system goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction. Formulate a plan of care that considers individual patient needs, demonstrate initiative, and seek formal and informal opportunities to improve clinical practice.
  • Actively engage in the clinical development of all members of the health care team. Request opportunities to learn advanced professional practice techniques from senior team members. Seek, accept, and utilize performance feedback to improve practice and maintain enthusiasm for continuous learning.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of research and evidence‑based practice, participate in journal clubs, and identify opportunities for improvement in the clinical area.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team, demonstrating awareness of cultural diversity and commitment to safety.
  • Show accountability for professional development that improves the quality of care and provide recommendations for improvement, participate in change initiatives, and lead by building healthy relationships among colleagues.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of foundational principles to provide appropriate care for the patient population, including growth and development over the lifespan and age‑specific needs.
  • Provide care in accordance with department policy and procedures.
