The East Carolina Community School involves cross campus collaboration to provide the students a spectrum of support and services to comprehensively address their academic, social-emotional, physical, and family/community needs. The school will include one class per grade level for pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. The ECU Community school involves an integrated partnership with Pitt County Schools and will be housed within a local elementary school.

Job Duties

The East Carolina Community School within the College of Education is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, 11-month Exempt Professional Staff (EPS) position. This is a stated definite term appointment for the role of Exceptional Child Director/Teacher. As an educator within the East Carolina University School, the EC Director/Special education teacher will collaborate to cultivate a culture of innovation that supports effective academic and behavior interventions and practices to promote academic and personal success for all students, including those with disabilities, in the school.

In particular, this includes providing or coordinating the provision of
1) special education and related services as identified on eligible students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and/or 504 Plans,
2) allowable accommodations and/or assistive technology throughout instruction and assessment, and
3) work collaboratively with others to facilitate and implement innovative instruction to achieve the mission of the school.

In addition, the special educator will be responsible for
1) collaborating in providing positive behavior and supports to all students,
2) assisting with the collecting and analyzing student data used in progress monitoring, and
3) collaborating in the IEP process. As the Exceptional Children's Services Director, the educator has knowledge of the policies and procedures regarding students with disabilities and will
1) prepare documents for inclusion in Exceptional Children reports and plans developed by the ECU Community School Principal,
2) coordinate contract services with other agencies, including Pitt County Schools, and
3) actively participate in the school's student support team meetings, special education referral, and annual special education meetings. The EC Director/Special educator will also work collaboratively with the ECU Community School Principal, university faculty/staff and others to facilitate and implement innovative instruction to achieve the mission of the school. and support the successful social-emotional, physical, and academic development of the students within the community school.

Leadership (25%)

* The EC Director/Teacher will demonstrate leadership to motivate effective learning practices and to strive for superior student performance so as to provide the best possible learning opportunities for academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth by students with disabilities.

* The EC Director/Teacher will facilitate the broad goals of the school and plan accordingly and collaboratively with other teachers, the ECU Community School Principal, the University School Executive Director and ECU faculty members to ensure that procedures and schedules are implemented to carry out the total school program.

* The EC Director/Teacher will cultivate self-determination leading to leadership in students and families.

* The EC Director/Teacher will actively participate in professional development offered within the Community School and beyond to demonstrate a willingness to grow as a professional educator.

* The EC Director/Teacher will serve as an advocate for the students through implementation of innovative strategies and integration of a variety of support services such that each student's social, emotional, physical and academic potential can be maximized.

* The EC Director/Teacher will foster and engage in collaboration within the school and the broader community.
