The Department of Earth, Environmental, and Sustainability Sciences(EESS) at Furman University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Professor of Environmental Science, expected to begin August 1, 2027. We seek candidates whose work engages with climate change, and who bring expertise in areas such as biogeochemical flows, critical zone science, climate science, or closely related fields. Successful candidates will demonstrate either an established track record of mentoring undergraduate researchers or a strong potential to doso.

We invite candidates with expertise in climate change who can teach general climate science to students across our interdisciplinary majors and pathways (Earth Science, Environmental Science, Sustainability Science) as well as advanced courses related to their expertise.

Areas of specialization may include biogeochemical flows, critical zone science, climate science, or other related fields.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary department dedicated to student mentorship and undergraduate research. The teaching load is four courses per year (two per semester), eachwith lab sections. The candidate will be expected to develop courses in their area of expertise, teach 100-level introductory science courses, and they may contribute to other programs,including First Year Writing Seminars, Furman's Pathways advising program, and May Experience study away courses.

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda that creates meaningful opportunities for undergraduate student involvement and supports our senior thesis program. All faculty also advise majors within the department and participate in department and university service. The EESS department is housed inside the Charles H. Townes Science Center and features state-of-the-art laboratories for watershed science, biogeochemistry, geospatial sciences, geology, and hydrogeology.

We welcome applicants interested in collaborating within our interdisciplinary department, which includes physical and life scientists as well as qualitative and quantitative social scientists. We also encourage collaboration across the university,including with Environmental Conservation Biology and the Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities.

A Ph.D. in environmental science, climate science, or a related field is required by August 1, 2027. Qualified candidates must demonstrate astrong commitment to undergraduate teaching as well as potential for excellence in research and mentorship.
