Orion welcomes applications from experienced electrical/instrumentation engineer with approximately 5 to 20+ years of industry experience. Final level (Engineer, Senior Engineer, or Lead) will be determined based on experience and expertise. Level of responsibility, title, and compensation will commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Job Summary
As part of Orion Engineers + Constructors Engineering Services Department, the Electrical / Instrumentation Engineer supports the development, design, implementation, and troubleshooting of electrical power, control, and instrumentation systems across oil and gas, chemical, and related industrial facilities. This role is responsible for preparing and reviewing electrical and instrumentation deliverables, supporting equipment and system design, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams from early concept development through detailed engineering, construction, commissioning, and startup.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and update electrical and instrumentation design deliverables, including one-line diagrams, area classification drawings, wiring and loop diagrams, control system architecture drawings, instrument indexes, I/O lists, cable schedules, and installation details.
- Prepare and review instrument datasheets, electrical equipment datasheets, material requisitions, and technical specifications for field instruments, analyzers, control valves, junction boxes, panels, MCCs, transformers, and related equipment.
- Support design and specification of electrical distribution and utilization systems, including low-voltage power distribution, motor controls, grounding, lighting, heat tracing, and hazardous area requirements, as applicable to project scope.
- Design and specify instrumentation and control systems for process measurement, control, shutdown, alarm, and monitoring functions in accordance with project requirements and applicable standards.
- Participate in development and review of P&IDs, control narratives, cause-and-effect diagrams, alarm philosophies, and instrument installation concepts to ensure alignment with process and operational requirements.
- Support PLC, DCS, SIS, ESD, and SCADA system design activities, including I/O development, control philosophy input, and system architecture coordination.
- Perform technical reviews of vendor documentation, quotations, and package designs to confirm compliance with project specifications, control requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
- Coordinate closely with process, piping, mechanical, civil/structural, automation, and project management teams to ensure proper integration of electrical and instrumentation systems.
- Participate in HAZOP, PHA, SIL, constructability, and design review activities and incorporate resulting actions into electrical and instrumentation designs.
- Provide technical support during procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, loop checking, testing, and troubleshooting activities as required.
- Assist with project planning activities including scope definition, estimating, scheduling, and development of engineering work packages.
- Communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly to internal stakeholders, vendors, and clients.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support project and departmental objectives.
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation/Control Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Approximately 5 to 20+ years of relevant electrical and/or instrumentation engineering experience in oil and gas, petrochemicals, chemicals, refining, power, or related industrial facilities.
- Demonstrated experience generating and working with P&IDs, one-line diagrams, instrument indexes, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, cable schedules, and equipment/instrument datasheets.
- Strong understanding of E&I design fundamentals, including power distribution basics, industrial control and safety systems, field instrumentation, control valves, and signal wiring practices in hazardous and non-hazardous industrial environments.
- Familiarity with industry standards and codes applicable to electrical and instrumentation design, such as NEC/NFPA, IEEE, ISA, IEC, API, and hazardous area classification practices, as applicable to project scope.
- Experience reviewing and developing E&I calculations, specifications, material requisitions, and construction drawing packages, with attention to constructability and field conditions.
- Prior involvement in HAZOP/PHA studies, SIL/LOPA, or related process safety and instrumented system reviews, with the ability to incorporate recommendations into E&I designs.
