The South Carolina Department of Agriculture is hiring a Wholesale Food Safety Officer for the South Greenville County/Spartanburg County region.
Responsibilities- Ensuring foods and cosmetics are manufactured, packaged, and marketed under safe and sanitary conditions. Verify that products are wholesome, free from contamination, filth, or otherwise unfit substances, and properly labeled according to current laws and requirements.
- Inspect food manufacturers, processors, storage facilities, distributors, and salvagers for compliance with state and federal laws; perform advanced specialized inspections as needed.
- Investigate consumer complaints and issue written reports of findings.
- Review product labels for compliance with requirements and make recommendations for revision.
- Remove adulterated products from sale (embargo).
- Ensure adulterated products are recalled or withdrawn from market when adulteration or contamination is suspected or determined.

- Bachelor's degree in an agricultural field, natural or physical sciences, public health, or a related technical field. A degree in another field and at least two years of directly related work experience may be substituted for the required bachelor’s degree with approval from State Division of Human Resources.
- Valid state driver's license and ability to operate a vehicle.
- Bachelor's degree in food packaging or food science.
- Knowledge of food industry regulations, data collection, tracking, recordkeeping, and analysis.
- Two (2) years of directly related experience or three (3) years of experience in related regulatory aspects of manufactured foods.
- Specialized training in Seafood HACCP & Better Process Control School.
- Preventative Controls Qualified Individual training.
- Experience working within federal contracts.
- Experience developing and conducting outreach.
- Ability to communicate effectively with various audiences and prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports.
- Must work effectively in a transparent, team‑oriented environment and prepare reports/written correspondence with accurate technical regulatory verbiage.
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders and shift objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
- Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods in extreme heat and cold.
- Ability to exercise judgment in applying and interpreting policies, procedures, rules and regulations, be detail‑oriented and highly organized.
- Extensive in‑state day travel using a state‑provided vehicle.
- Occasional overnight and/or out‑of‑state travel required.
- Selected candidate must successfully complete HACCP, Better Processing School, Preventative Controls Qualified Individual and other job‑related training within 2 years of hire.
- Ability to read fine print on food product labels.
