Brief Description
Fire Inspector I – The City of Greenville is seeking a qualified Fire Inspector I to conduct inspections of commercial properties, perform permit field inspections, assist in fire investigations, and provide public education on fire safety.
Job SummaryUnder direct supervision, the Fire Inspector I will conduct inspections of commercial properties, review permit applications and new or renovated fire protection systems, and perform occupancy compliance checks. Responsibilities also include after‑hours life safety inspections of nightclubs and other assembly occupancies, attending special events, performing fire watch duties, providing fire safety training, assisting in evacuation and emergency action plan development, conducting fire investigations, and serving as a call‑in responder on a rotating basis.
Job Duties- Conduct Fire Prevention Inspections (60%) – Inspect sprinkler, fire alarm and protection equipment on commercial properties, document findings in the public safety records management system, perform follow‑up inspections, and conduct after‑hours safety inspections of nightclubs and similar venues. Assist in public fire safety classes.
- Assist with Permit Field Inspections (30%) – Work with Fire Inspector II and contractors to inspect new and renovated systems, verify police compliance with fire codes, document records, and conduct special event site inspections.
- Assist with Fire Investigations (10%) – Respond to scenes, determine fire origins, interview witnesses, photograph, diagram, and gather evidence, and testify in civil or criminal proceedings as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) or more years of experience as a Firefighter II or higher.
- Required at hire:
- NFPA FFII meeting IFSAC or Pro Board certifications.
- Current CPR certification.
- NIMS/ICS or an NFA course meeting NIMS/ICS (100, 200 & 700).
- SCFA EVDT or equivalent IFSAC/Pro Board certification.
- Arson Detection for the First Responder or equivalent.
- Required to obtain within one (1) year of hire:
- Basic Fire/Arson Investigations (SCFA or NFA).
- SCFA Fire Marshal Certification.
- ICC Fire Inspector I.
- SCFA S.C. Fire Marshal Rules and Regulations.
- Valid South Carolina Class D Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of on‑site inspection procedures, fire protection system testing, and fire code enforcement.
- Ability to perform occupancy compliance checks, investigate fire origins, gather evidence, testify in legal proceedings, and attend training and public education sessions.
- Proficiency with fire equipment (vehicles, ladders, hoses, detectors, etc.) and general office equipment.
- Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to produce clear, professional reports.
Primary work locations include office, field vehicle, and outdoor environments. Protective equipment required: hard hat, safety glasses, safety boots, respirators, and SCBA. The role involves exposure to mechanical, electrical, fire, chemical, and environmental hazards; noise; vibration; physical strain; and irregular hours.

Certification Requirements for Fire Inspector I- NFPA FFII meeting IFSAC or Pro Board certifications.
