Influence the Future of Commercial Property Risk

Are you ready to shape how commercial property risk is evaluated, priced, and mitigated across the insurance industry? IBHS is seeking an experienced commercial property underwriting professional to translate advanced catastrophe research into practical underwriting strategy that strengthens portfolios nationwide.

This is not a production underwriting role—it's a strategic, industry-facing opportunity to bridge engineering science and underwriting execution. You will work directly with leading insurers, underwriting leaders, and IBHS researchers to transform real-world loss data and full-scale testing insights into actionable underwriting guidance that drives meaningful change.

What You'll Do Translate Science into Strategy
  • Convert IBHS catastrophe research into practical underwriting guidance for commercial property portfolios
  • Identify structural loss drivers and develop evaluation frameworks that support underwriting and pricing decisions
  • Align emerging loss trends with research priorities to ensure real-world relevance and application
Influence Industry Practice
  • Partner with underwriting, product, and loss control leaders across member organizations
  • Support the evolution of resilience-focused underwriting strategies
  • Provide consultative insight that strengthens risk selection and mitigation approaches
Engage and Educate
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to underwriting and loss control professionals
  • Design and deliver presentations, workshops, and educational sessions
  • Collaborate with IBHS engineers to ensure research findings are operationalized within underwriting workflows
What You Bring

Required Qualifications
  • 4+ years of commercial property underwriting experience
  • Strong knowledge of commercial property risk assessment, policy forms, rating structures, and underwriting workflows
  • Experience evaluating catastrophe exposures (wind, hail, wildfire, severe weather)
  • Ability to translate complex technical findings into clear, practical underwriting guidance
  • Confidence presenting to professional audiences and influencing without direct authority
  • Bachelor's degree required
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPCU, ARM, or related insurance designations
  • Experience with catastrophe modeling or risk assessment tools
  • Track record of driving industry adoption of new underwriting practices
Why IBHS

IBHS operates a world-class research facility capable of simulating Category 3 hurricanes, hailstorms, and wildfire ember attacks on full-scale structures. Our work directly influences building standards, mitigation strategies, and underwriting practices across the industry. In this role, you will:

  • Influence how commercial property risk is evaluated nationwide
  • Help define mitigation strategies that reduce catastrophe losses
  • Engage directly with senior underwriting and product leaders
  • Deepen your technical expertise at the intersection of science and insurance

Travel: Up to 25% may be required.

Our Commitment to You

At IBHS, our people are central to our impact. We are committed to building a workplace where individuals are respected, supported, and held to high standards of professionalism and integrity. We value thoughtful collaboration, accountability, and a shared commitment to advancing science-based solutions that strengthen resilience nationwide.
