Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of equipment shop activities related to diagnosing and repairing mechanical problems in motorized and specialty construction equipment. Acts as the Assistant Shop Foreman and serves as the lead mechanic in a county equipment maintenance and repair shop. Serves as the Assistant Shop Foreman and county lead mechanic performing diagnosis, repair or replacement of parts as necessary to maintain all gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, exhaust systems, cylinder heads, valves, timing belts, and cooling systems.

Performs wiring repairs, brake jobs, and tune ups when required on vehicles. Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment as required. Manages supply room operations, and all administrative activities associated with equipment parts inventory management documenting daily work transactions (goods receipts and transfers), inventory control (inventory and cost corrections), accounting (surplus inventory and inventory reconciliation), service tickets usage (ticket modifications and deletions), work requests (parts distribution), etc.

Utilizes Equipment Management and Service Modules within departmental asset management systems such as HMMS and EAMS, and other programs that support shop operations. Assists Shop Foreman in ensuring that all criteria are met for shop certifications. Performs electric welding or gas welding and fabrication, as needed, for repairs on various equipment, and for making modifications to equipment to improve the production of utilizations.

Assists County Procurement Specialist and Shop Foreman in the procurement of equipment parts and accessories related to equipment maintenance activities. Assigns shelf location, stores items, rotates stock, and monitors usage levels of equipment parts. Assists Shop Foreman in assigning and distributing work tasks to mechanics, provides technical assistance to other mechanics on equipment and vehicle diagnostics. Monitors PMs for compliance.

Instructs shop mechanics daily in safety practices and ensures that mechanics maintain a safe and clean shop area and ensuring that all work is performed within OSHA and DHEC compliance. Conducts safety inspections on vehicles and equipment prior to vehicle and equipment leaving shop after repairs and services. Repairs vehicles during service calls that require repair before movement and assists in shop operations during after hour emergencies and inclement weather operations.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Two (2) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
