Highway Maintenance Worker III - Specialized Equipment Operator

Job Summary

Performs skilled manual labor and operates various equipment such as a mini excavator and a bucket truck in activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of bridges on the state highway system. Duties include grading, mowing, sweeping, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete, cutting, painting, installing and placing steel sections. Operates specialized equipment such as a snooper truck and crawler, complex saws, power tools, measuring devices, and welders.

Places traffic control devices to establish a maintenance work zone in accordance with the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Operates equipment during emergency and inclement weather operations; may be required for extended working hours or 12‑hour shifts.

• Two (2) years of related work experience, or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required within six (6) months of placement in the position.
• Experience operating heavy equipment such as lowboy truck tractors, excavators, and front‑end loaders is preferred.

The essential functions involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, walk for extended periods, tread rough terrain, and work in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. Work may be required outside the normal scheduled week, especially during inclement weather.
