Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Job Summary
Under regular direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, maintains turf equipment and power tools to maximize safety and productivity. Utilizes department tools, facilities, and resources to effect repairs, replacements, and upgrades of new and existing equipment, as well as to perform routine maintenance on turf equipment. Provides emergency response and on‑call service for in‑field repairs to minimize production interruptions.
Conducts seasonal maintenance following manufacturer’s guidelines. Assists with inventory of repair parts and pursues ongoing education in the field of turf and safety equipment.
- Perform Small Engine Equipment Repairs (65% of time): maintain turf equipment and power tools, conduct seasonal maintenance, remove unsafe equipment, research problems, log repairs.
- Perform Basic Services and Repairs (15% of time): replace bulbs, tighten loose parts, tire service, perform multi‑point inspections, document tasks, assist other mechanics.
- Provide On‑call Field Service (10% of time): respond to field calls, perform diagnostic procedures, change and repair tires, replace batteries, jump‑start equipment.
- Provide Facility and Resource Management (5% of time): salvage usable parts, dispose of used parts, maintain shop inventory.
- Clean and Maintain Shop Area (5% of time): keep shop clean, assist co‑workers, store tools.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Over two years of experience maintaining and repairing small engine equipment and/or automotive repair, tire service, and vehicle mechanics.
- Completion of mechanic competency classification test at level I.
- FEMA ICES 100c, 700b, and 552 completed within three months of employment.
- Valid South Carolina Class D Driver’s License.
- Preferred
- ASE certified technician in A1, A2, A4, A5, and T2.
- Briggs‑Stratton/Honda/Kawasaki small engine certification.
- OSHA and safe working practices and procedures.
- Landscape and turf maintenance machines and tools.
- Use of pressure gauges, vacuum pumps, feeler gauges, and diagnostic equipment.
- Manufacturer‑outlined preventive maintenance measures for automotive and diesel equipment.
- Perform multi‑point vehicle and equipment inspections.
- Respond to service calls and diagnose maintenance requirements.
- Read and follow equipment manuals and safety procedures.
- Communicate maintenance requirements to vendors and contractors.
- Work with all personnel levels and maintain good relationships.
- Write work reports and compose professional emails.
- Perform mathematical calculations and use hand, air, electric, and measuring tools.
- Use specialized software and fleet maintenance systems.

Environmental/Health And Safety Factors: frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and hazards; exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, respiratory hazards, wetness, electrical and fire hazards.
Physical Demands: requires hearing, vision, handling/grasping; frequent talking, fine dexterity, lifting up to 20 pounds constantly, up to 100 pounds occasionally, up to 150 pounds rarely; walking, standing, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, crouching, balancing.
Mental Demands: working closely with others, tedious or exacting work, time pressures, frequent task changes.
