Job Summary
Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, operates on specialized electronic signal and test equipment. Assembles, installs, services, tests, repairs, troubleshoots and adjusts electrical and mechanical components of traffic signal and related equipment to include signal cabinets, conflict monitors, detectors, relays, and controllers. Performs yearly preventive maintenance of traffic signal cabinets, including making repairs in the field as necessary.
Assembles, configures, and tests traffic signal cabinets in the shop for field installation. Performs corrective and/or preventive maintenance, diagnosis, modifications, installations, configurations, and inspections for wired and wireless communications systems, including radio and microwave broadband technology. Maintains and checks signal detection systems such as inductive loops, video detection cameras, and radar equipment. Communicates inventory needs to Signal System Supervisor. Responds to after‑hours emergencies when on call.
Installs and maintains various Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices, including Pan‑Tilt‑Zoom (PTZ) cameras, detection equipment, and travel‑time monitoring equipment within signal cabinet.
- Perform Preventive Maintenance of Traffic Signals (40%):
Perform maintenance duties on all traffic signals, flashers, and school flashers once per year. Maintenance duties include, but are not limited to, checking timings and functionality of signal controllers; wiring, loop and video detection, and fan operation; change air filters; ensure signal cabinets are internally and externally free from dust, debris, and foreign objects. Make wiring and other repairs as needed to maintain optimal function. - Check Traffic Signal System (20%):
Support Signal System Supervisor with the maintenance of traffic signal systems. Make field repairs of faulty system equipment. Maintain signal system computer equipment. Download system timings to local intersections through a system master controller. Ensure proper signal timings are uploaded to server. Communicate inventory needs to Signal System Supervisor. - Respond to Trouble Calls (20%):
Respond to trouble calls regarding traffic signal operation, flashers, and school flashers. Trouble calls may involve a traffic signal in a flash condition, power outage, incorrect signal timing, improper signal function, flashers or school flashers not working or functioning properly. Respond to traffic signal detection problems. - Install New Traffic Signal Cabinets and Equipment (20%):
Assist Signal System Supervisor with the installation and setup of traffic signal cabinets. Install and maintain various ITS devices, including PTZ cameras, detection equipment, and travel‑time monitoring equipment within signal cabinet. Set up 2070 quad, 332, and 336 cabinets inside shop for proper operation at desired location. Help set cabinet on base nect traffic signal wires for proper operation. Adjust traffic signal controls and monitor.
Hook‑up, adjust and tune traffic signal detectors. - Perform other duties as assigned.
- Associate degree or equivalent experience/training in electronic engineering technology.
- Over two (2) years of experience in electronics and signal systems design.
- International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level II certification.
- IMSA Sign and Pavement Marking Level I within six (6) months of achieving IMSA Traffic Signal Level II certification or as soon as practical, based on the exam schedule of IMSA.
- Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.
- 2070 quad, 332, and 336 cabinets.
- Standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in electronic electrical trade work.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in electrical circuits and wiring systems and ability to apply knowledge to work problems.
- Standard specifications for traffic signals and street lighting.
- Work zone safety.
- The installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices, both in‑cabinet and overhead.
