Process Engineer I, or “PE I,” is an intermediate technical operations role for individuals who demonstrate moderate to highly proficient levels of skill in understanding the overall process and in their daily roles of continuous process improvement, troubleshooting, operating equipment, conducting machine maintenance, and training new hires. They continually use troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve issues and develop creative ways to prevent recurring problems.
They demonstrate understanding of the process, equipment, and machines and use these skills to train and educate others. They work independently or in cross‑functional teams and show an aptitude for continuous improvement in both the process and themselves.
Skills and Abilities
- Identify and eliminate safety risks to promote a safe and effective work environment.
- Create, train, monitor, and maintain Centerlines for any process area.
- Understand raw materials and all quality testing required to demonstrate material acceptance.
- Knowledge of each process area:
Repulping, Delivery, and Forming Machines. - Take samples and perform standard testing alongside quality technicians, operators, and material handlers.
- Learn more in‑depth testing processes and techniques when working with Process Engineers and peers.
- Strictly follow quality control work instructions, standard operating procedures, and safety protocols.
- Understand and demonstrate knowledge of the following Repulping process steps: refining and its impact on freeness, deflaking, screening and cleaning.
- Understand and demonstrate knowledge of the following Delivery System process steps: dilution, chemical dosing, and dosing order.
- Understand and demonstrate knowledge of the following Forming Machine process steps: forming drum/forming, EOAT, hot pressing, trimming/coining.
- General understanding of process control and the fundamental operation of different valve types, instruments, and equipment.
- General understanding of slurry dewatering and factors that impact drainage in pulp systems.
- Understand process chemistry, dosing of chemicals, and troubleshoot process or machine issues related to chemical dosing.
- Understand pulp coating processes and troubleshoot coating issues (process, raw materials, etc.).
- Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between coating and product formation.
- Understand quality criteria for finished product and troubleshoot process issues related to quality defects.
- Work with Process Engineers or peers to better understand process equipment, flow, and continuously improve troubleshooting capabilities.
- Work with Subject Matter Experts to better understand production of pulp products, raw material selection, and finished product performance.
- Work with vendors and suppliers for new equipment installation, startup, or optimization.
- Run and manage trials independently or with Process Engineering/CFI, identify rationale for trials or process changes, collect data, analyze results, and report outcomes.
- Follow DMAIC or other Lean Six Sigma concepts for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with the Maintenance group, support PMs, and identify spare part opportunities.
- Develop best practices for equipment maintenance, including procedures and SOPs.
- Knowledge of FANUC/ABB programming, automation, or robotics is preferred.
- Complete tasks assigned by supervisor or management as necessary.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Comply with GMP guidelines.
- Use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Develop and write Standard Operating Procedures or Work Instructions as needed.
- Present findings to local plant leadership and/or peers.
- Document and track process changes to understand impacts and the importance of Centerlines.
- Apply independent troubleshooting skills.
- Work independently on projects as needed.
- Communicate effectively and collaborate with team members.
- Maintain detail orientation and multitask as required.
- Foster a positive attitude toward teamwork and continuous process improvement.
