Position: Librarian I (Youth Services Librarian)

Overview

This class of position involves responsible multi‑specialized professional library work. It requires a strong public service orientation and aptitude, and working knowledge of information technology in libraries. The role is for a Youth Services Librarian with the Greenwich Library.

Assignment Level

Assignment Level I:
Responsible for providing quality patron service to children, young adults and adults in a variety of library service assignments. As an accountable team member, participates in planning and goal setting, assessing needs and providing services in accordance with library policies and practices. Backs up team members and assists others as needed. Some evening and weekend/alternate hours required. Reports to a Librarian III, Library Manager, or Library Director.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university.
  • General knowledge of library procedures (Level I) or 18 months of experience in professional library work (Level II).
  • Special necessary requirement for Level II: hands on experience adding content to the online catalog or library website.
  • Knowledge of adult, teen, and/or children’s literature or services in all formats.
  • Knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials and administrative practices.
  • Working knowledge, skill and ability in the use of online databases.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a wide variety of computer, audiovisual and office equipment related to library operations.
  • Ability to make decisions based on established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to listen and communicate in an honest, direct and tactful manner in meetings and one‑on‑one with team members.
  • Ability to work independently and with other team members.
  • Ability to manage time, set priorities and communicate with other team members as needed.
  • Physical ability to shelve books, set up and troubleshoot equipment, lift book trucks, sit, stand, bend, reach, climb stools.
  • Ability to work well with volunteer and community groups and establish relationships with patrons, trustees, volunteers, town officials and other staff members.
Career Path

A Librarian I who successfully completes twelve consecutive months of work following the six month probationary period shall be upgraded to a Librarian II conditional upon the following:

  • The employee received a satisfactory rating in his or her most recent performance evaluation as a Librarian I. In the event there is no current performance evaluation, the employee will be upgraded to Librarian II.
  • The employee has not received discipline within the past eighteen months.
  • Duties and Responsibilities Level I
    • Provides reference and readers’ advisory services in person, by mail, telephone or electronically to library patrons of all ages using appropriate library materials in all formats.
    • Communicates library practices and policies to patrons clearly and effectively.
    • Participates in collection development guided by the library’s collection development policy. May assist with the selection of materials in one or more specific areas for adults, young adults and/or children.
    • Assists library patrons and staff in using technology, conducts formal training sessions, and resolves routine equipment requests involving copiers, printers, PCs, tablets, ereaders and other devices.
    • Prepares displays, exhibits, book lists, blogs and bibliographies; may contribute website and social media content relating to an area of library service.
    • May prepare team schedules for staff members.
    • May serve as liaison to schools or other community groups, conduct story hours and school class visits according to professional theory and developmental guidelines.
    • Implements and may initiate outreach programs and training for groups of all ages.
    • Serves as “virtual librarian,” responding to e‑mail queries from the public and other libraries and patrons.
    • Provides input to reports, minutes and letters for the Team, Library Board of Trustees, etc. related to library policy, programming and/or school activities.
    • Keeps current with developments in the library profession; attends professional meetings and conferences; participates in team planning and goal setting.
    • Performs related work as required.
