Avangrid is seeking a highly skilled Transmission Planning Engineer to join our team in identifying and developing transmission system investments to modernize the electric grid and support the ongoing clean energy transition. As a Lead Engineer, your primary responsibilities will include leading and performing technical power system studies including modeling, simulations, and analyses to address system needs and support the company’s strategic vision.

Major Responsibilities
  • Collaborate, perform, and lead reliability and/or economic driven studies including voltage, thermal, PV, transfer limit, short circuit, and stability assessments.
  • Analyze and assess complex transmission systems at numerous voltage levels. Document and communicate results and recommendations including data manipulation, report writing, and summary presentations.
  • Continually strive to innovate and integrate improvements to increase the precision and efficiency of transmission planning.
  • Mentor and support the team to advance business needs and develop subject matter expert skills as necessary.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and industry peers on regional activities (e.g., NPCC, ISOs).
  • Develop and apply understanding of planning criteria, guidelines, standards (e.g., NERC, NPCC) and analysis software such as PSS/E, TARA, and ASPEN.
  • Participate in transmission and substation site inspections; attend industry workshops and meetings as needed.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline is required. Advanced degree and/or professional certifications may be considered.
  • Minimum of 7 years of industry experience related to planning or operation of transmission and distribution power systems.
Technical Skills & Requirements
  • Software Proficiency: Expert-level power system modeling and simulation software (e.g., TARA, PSS/E, Power World, PSLF). Experience with dynamic stability, short circuit, PV/QV, transfer limit analyses is a plus.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of Local, State, Regional, and Federal regulatory standards and processes; ability to plan actions to ensure compliance.
  • Team Management: Ability to lead internal and external staff toward common goals, including organizing and guiding a team to complete commitments.
  • Communication & Documentation: Clear written and verbal communication; ability to document and review engineering work and prepare presentations.
  • Project Development: Ability to coordinate with diverse subject matter experts to develop robust project proposals.
Behavioral Skills
  • Provide technical leadership in complex projects with wide department impact.
  • Mentor, develop, and support team members in technical skills.
  • Collaborate across departments and liaise with contractors on policy, standards, and best practices.
