Kids In Crisis is Connecticut's ONLY free, round-the-clock agency providing emergency shelter, crisis counseling and community educational programs for children of all ages and families dealing with a wide range of crises, including domestic violence, mental health and family problems, substance abuse, economic difficulties and more. We're seeking a Finance Director to lead the organization's accounting, financial reporting, and compliance functions. This role ensures the integrity of financial operations, supports the organization's fiscal health, and maintains strong internal controls.

  • Location: Greenwich, CT (on-site)
  • Schedule: Full-time
  • FLSA status: Exempt
  • Supervisory scope: May supervise finance/accounting staff, interns, temporary staff, and/or outside vendors/consultants
What you'll do
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations (general ledger, journal entries, reconciliations, cash management, month-end and year-end close)
  • Strengthen and monitor internal controls to promote accuracy, accountability, segregation of duties, and protection of organizational assets
  • Coordinate annual audit preparation and serve as primary liaison to external auditors, tax preparers, and financial consultants
  • Oversee payroll administration and benefits-related financial coordination in partnership with external providers
  • Support grant compliance: track restricted/unrestricted funds; monitor budgets and expenditures; prepare/review grant financial reports and reimbursement requests
  • Support annual budgeting, forecasting, cash flow monitoring, and variance analysis
  • Prepare timely financial statements and management/board reporting with clear analysis for leadership
  • Improve finance systems, processes, and documentation; implement practical process improvements
  • Partner cross-functionally with program leaders, operations, HR, and leadership on financial workflows and stewardship
What we're looking for
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, economics, nonprofit management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • CPA, CMA, or comparable advanced financial credential preferred.
  • Five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, finance, or financial management, preferably within a nonprofit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements, internal controls, audit processes, financial reporting and analysis.
  • Experience with grant compliance, restricted funding, expense allocation, and financial analysis.
  • Proficiency with accounting systems, financial reporting tools, and Excel-based analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively across functions.
  • Strong judgment, analytical ability, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of accounting operations, financial controls, budgeting, and nonprofit financial reporting practices.
  • Ability to analyze financial information, identify trends or issues, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Ability to interpret policies, funding requirements, and financial procedures and apply them consistently.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential financial and personnel information with discretion.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with leadership, program staff, auditors, vendors, and outside advisors.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of finance support staff or other assigned personnel, where applicable.
