General Statement of Duties
Performs skilled journeyman level carpentry work in the construction, maintenance and repair of structures, equipment and miscellaneous items and in general construction labor duties. Assignments require the use of standard carpentry practices, tools and journeyman skills including sketches or detailed construction blueprints. The work may be performed independently or as a member of a crew and is subject to review in progress and/or upon completion for quality of workmanship, techniques and conformance with instructions.
Reports to Foreman.
Qualifications
Graduation from high school or trade school with completion of a recognized apprenticeship in carpentry work plus two years of experience working as a journeyman carpenter or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
:
Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and practices of the carpentry trade.
Considerable knowledge of standard building, construction and maintenance and repair trades.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Skilled in the care and proper use of tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade, and related trades.
Ability to interpret and work from sketches and drawings and to make simple time and material estimates from blueprints, sketches or oral instructions.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to make decisions according to laws and regulations and according to established department policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and with the general public.
Ability to operate and maintain standard building, construction and maintenance and repair trade tools and equipment including but not limited to, those of the carpentry trade.
Ability to climb and perform all job skill, duties and erecting equipment at excessive heights; walking on roofs, maintaining balance and working at high levels, work in strenuous positions over long periods of time and carry heavy materials alone. Ability to move/transport heavy furniture and/or equipment if needed.
Ability to swim (for MFO position).

ESSENTIAL FEATURES:
Performs a wide range of carpentry work in the alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings and miscellaneous building structures including roofing, framing, sheathing, insulating, sheet-rocking, plastering, patching, installing windows, hanging doors, siding, finish trim work, cabinet building and installing glass glazing, installing miscellaneous flooring, shelving, tiling and form building, etc.
Repairs various tables, chairs, benches, cupboards, counters, and furniture and builds specialty items including bookcases and cabinets.
Performs hand and bench work using radial saws, planes, table saws, wood lathes, joiners, planes, sanding machines, and drill presses.
Performs plastering, tile laying, concrete work, and painting in connection with regular carpentry and building construction and maintenance duties. Seals, varnishes and shellacs as required.
Works from rough sketches or blue prints; prepares time and material estimates. Distributes and moves materials to various job locations, picks up and delivers materials.
Perform unrelated duties, i.e., move furniture, equipment, machinery, and all basic labor duties.
May supervise helpers.
Performs other related work as required.
