Department Information
This position is only open to Colorado state residents.
New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.
CDOT has a vacancy for a Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic operating out of Greenwood Village, CO
. We look for someone who likes to take apart equipment, diagnose problems, and restore them to working order.
- Base pay: $2,441–$2,622 biweekly ($63,480–$68,172 annually). Location is eligible for an additional $1,000 monthly housing stipend, bringing total pay to $75,480–$80,172 annually.
- Work schedule:
4-day week (06:00–16:30) from May–September; 5-day week (08:00–16:30) from October–April.
- Diagnose and repair heavy truck and construction equipment malfunctions on all major systems.
- Overhaul and rebuild components and equipment on heavy truck and construction equipment.
- Use test equipment to diagnose defects or malfunctions.
- Work on a variety of equipment such as 3.5‑ton single axle, 10‑ton tandem axle, tractor‑trailers, front‑end loaders, motor graders, asphalt paving machines, and 15‑ft mower tractors.
- Perform preventative maintenance and annual safety inspections.
- Design, fabricate parts and special tools.
- Order and procure parts and supplies.
- Use computers to track vehicle repairs.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
- Other job duties as assigned.
- Combination of four years of experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair or AND/OR education in automotive or diesel equipment mechanics (with transcript).
- At least one year of experience diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel equipment such as 10‑ton double axle snowplows, tractor‑trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, and/or 15‑ft mower tractors.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no restrictions on air brakes for operation in Colorado.
- Must pass a pre‑employment screening (background, driving records, etc.).
- Some on‑call and shift work may be required.
- May be required to pass a controlled substance test and DOT physical.
- Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays.
- Must be physically able to perform essential job duties.
- New employees required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora; veteran employees attend one week each year.
- Demonstrated success with the duties listed above.
- Years of state service experience related to the duties of this position.
- Extensive experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing automotive and heavy‑duty diesel vehicles and equipment up to 10 tons.

- 96 hours of vacation and 80 hours of sick leave earned within the first year + 11 paid holidays.
- No out‑of‑pocket expenses for tools; all hand and power tools, specialty equipment, PPE, and training on equipment, CPR, and first‑aid are provided.
- Full payment for CDL physical; reimbursement for 50% of CDL renewal after the first year.
- Majority of work is in the field.
