General FunctionThe job of Head Coach – Track & Field is done for the purpose(s) of assisting in the design, implementation, and oversight of the athletic program for track and field, in accordance with applicable rules, regulations, and school policies; providing leadership and supervision of assistant coaches and program personnel; supervising and ensuring the safety of student-athletes during all practices, competitions, and related activities;
using sound instructional and training techniques to develop athletic skill, discipline, and sportsmanship; serving as a positive role model for student-athletes; and acting as a liaison for school and track program with other schools, athletic organizations, officials, families, and the broader community.
- Implements practice schedules, meet schedules, and related events (e.g., usage of track facilities, field event areas, equipment, and staff assignments) for the purpose of ensuring efficient and safe program operation.
- Instructs student-athletes in track and field events (e.g., sprints, distance, relays, jumps, throws) for the purpose of promoting individual skill development, discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Develops team and individual training programs (e.g., strength, speed, endurance, agility, technique, nutrition, and injury prevention) for the purpose of enhancing athletic performance and overall physical development.
- Plans meet strategies and event preparation for the purpose of preparing student-athletes and relay teams for competition and optimizing individual and team performance.
- Analyzes competitors’ strengths, event entries, and meet conditions prior to and/or during competitions for the purpose of making informed decisions regarding event assignments, relay lineups, and competitive strategy.
- Assesses student-athlete performance for the purpose of providing feedback, monitoring progress, and evaluating individual and team effectiveness throughout the season.
- Supervises student-athletes during all program activities (e.g., practices, competitions, travel, meetings, and conditioning sessions) for the purpose of ensuring participant safety and maintaining a positive, respectful environment.
- Assists with program-related activities (e.g., parent meetings, athlete recognition events, award ceremonies, and banquets) for the purpose of communicating program expectations and recognizing student-athlete accomplishments.
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree, pass a background check, and do various MSHSAA certifications – prior playing/coaching experience is preferred.
