SUMMARYSpecial Education Coordinators are responsible for supporting all aspects of special education programming for students with disabilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESOther duties may be assigned.
- Assists with the coordination and supervision of special services programs.
- Assists with the coordination of activities of special education personnel.
- Ensures compliance with standards, regulations, state/federal laws, and district policies.
- Conducts regular meetings with professional staff and other interested parties.
- Coordinates departmental operations with other school district departments.
- Serves on administrative committees as needed.
- Participates in special consultations with school psychologists, other special services personnel, building administrators, teachers, parents, and as appropriate, with students.
- Assists special education teachers and support personnel in areas related to child development, behavior, and instruction.
- Acts as a liaison between schools and community agencies, special schools, medical professionals, and other resources offering specialized services.
- Participates in state and regional meetings to keep abreast of new developments and improve service delivery and supports within the district.

- Supervises the maintenance of student records and the completion of all required reports.
- Assists in coordinating special transportation for students when needed.
- Provides opportunities for staff development.
- Serves as a resource for parents of students with disabilities.
- Performs other such tasks and assumes other such responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned.
Assists with the supervision of special education teachers and teaching assistants (in conjunction with respective principals); special services and psychological services staff; related service providers; and secretaries for the Special Services Department.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEMust have valid teaching certificate, at least five years successful experience in public school work either as a teacher or in psychological services, testing, guidance, and/or administration. Master's degree with intensive coursework and/or experience in the areas above preferred.
Language SkillsAbility to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information to administrators, top management, public groups/community, and Board of Education.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to analyze student data in spreadsheets and software programs.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
OTHERSKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must have experience in or have knowledge of the various disability classifications, procedures for identifying these conditions, and program alternatives. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk and reach with hands or arms and must occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds. The employee must frequently travel to different locations in the district. The employee is required to work irregular or extended work hours.
WORKENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and staff in addition to meeting multiple demands from several people.
