Transportation Engineering Associate

Job Responsibilities

At Sumter Maintenance, the staff assists the Resident Maintenance Engineer (RME) in supervising the encroachment permit process, reviews permits prior to submission to the RME or District for approval, and supervises permit technicians.

Trains permit technicians on the EPPS Permit System, assists the RME in supervising contractors and local municipalities working under encroachment permits and purchase orders, and assists in managing maintenance activities including guardrail repair and installation, chip seal, resurfacing, full depth patching, pavement markings, vegetation management, and related tasks. This involves gathering project data, preparing specifications and submittal packages, overseeing existing permit work for QA/QC, erosion control, and traffic control, responding to SCDOT web pages and investigating damage claims, managing Non‑Federal and Federal Aid routes for resurfacing, developing estimates with Sumter Construction, providing assistance during inclement weather, and serving as an assistant to the shift supervisor to maintain activity records and coordinate crews and equipment.

• A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management, or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

The essential functions involve sitting or standing for extended periods. The position may require travel, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, driving, walking, working on rough and uneven terrain, close proximity to motor traffic, and natural environmental hazards. The role may involve work outside the normal schedule, especially during inclement weather or emergencies, and may require overtime, nighttime, and/or weekend hours during hazardous weather or emergencies.
