Job Overview
Under limited supervision, performs professional civil engineering work in a supervisory capacity, managing the geotechnical design unit of a Regional Production Group and making policy recommendations. Signs and seals engineering documents.
Responsibilities- Review geotechnical design calculations, studies, reports, and documentation for multiple road and bridge projects developed by the RPG Geotechnical Design Team.
- Supervise and train subordinates within the team, managing all personnel matters including EPMS reviews.
- Provide support to construction offices related to geotechnical functions, including foundation installation plans, roadway foundation issues, roadway structures, and other relevant items.
- Verify geotechnical plans prepared by others to ensure conformance with SCDOT standards and current design standards; verify geotechnical designs.
- Track project schedules and ensure that geotechnical engineering design tasks are completed in accordance with right‑of‑way and construction obligation schedules.
- Execute complex geotechnical designs associated with the soil conditions of the Midlands region, including embankment/slope stability issues, liquefaction mitigation, settlement analysis and design, and other relevant design items; provide support to other RPG Geotechnical Design Teams on these unique designs.
- Coordinate with the Geotechnical Engineering Support office on policy issues, research, software needs, and geotechnical engineering training.
- Provide expert testimony when needed.
- Manage and execute geotechnical "on‑call" work orders and GES consultant contracts; coordinate with the contracts office to prepare scopes of services, fee estimates, consultant evaluations and other contract documentation in accordance with DD41.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
A bachelor's degree in engineering and five (5) years of engineering work experience.
Required:
registration as a Professional Engineer by the South Carolina State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is also required.
The physical demands of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods, occasional travel, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, walking for extended periods, traversing rough terrain, working in close proximity to motor traffic, and operating in natural environmental hazards. The role may also require working outside normal business hours or responding to emergency situations.
