Position Description

Position Summary

The Quality Control Roadway Technician is responsible for performing field inspections, sampling, and testing of asphalt, aggregates, and other construction materials on roadway projects to ensure compliance with project specifications, DOT standards, and company quality requirements. This role provides real-time feedback to paving crews and supervisors to maintain quality and consistency in all roadway construction activities.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform field testing of asphalt, aggregates, and other roadway materials in accordance with DOT, ASTM, and AASHTO specifications.
• Conduct density testing of asphalt pavement using nuclear or non-nuclear gauges.
• Sample materials from production facilities, haul trucks, and job sites as required.
• Monitor paving operations to verify compliance with project specifications for temperature, thickness, and smoothness.
• Record and report all test results promptly to supervisors and project managers.
• Calibrate, maintain, and operate testing equipment and tools.
• Identify and communicate potential quality issues to supervisors and crews in real time.
• Assist in implementing corrective actions when test results fall outside of specification limits.
• Maintain accurate documentation of all testing and inspection activities.

Adhere to all company safety policies and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in the field.

Position Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in materials testing or construction quality control preferred.
• 1-2 years of experience in roadway construction testing or inspection preferred.
• Familiarity with DOT, ASTM, and AASHTO testing methods and specifications.
• Ability to operate nuclear density gauges and other field testing equipment.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise procedures.
• Good communication skills and ability to work effectively with crews and supervisors.
• Valid driver's license; clean 10 year MVR
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and meet all safety requirements.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and carry equipment and materials to and from testing locations.
• Frequent walking, bending, kneeling, and standing on uneven surfaces.
• Exposure to loud noise, hot materials, and active construction environments.

Ability to work long or irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required by project schedules.
