Position: PEST CONTROL TECHNICIAN III AND IV - HILO, HAWAII ISLAND (OHHI)

Operation Hire Hawaii (OH-HI) project is a targeted outreach initiative featuring an expedited hiring process, fast‑tracking qualified applicants into job opportunities throughout Hawaiʻi.

Level III - $3,606 to $4,563 per month (SR‑11, Step C to I)

Level IV - $3,900 to $4,933 per month (SR‑13, Step C to I)

Duties Summary

These positions are located in the Plant Industry Division and the Apiary unit. The Plant Pest Control Branch protects Hawaiʻi’s agricultural enterprises and natural resources by integrated biological, chemical, mechanical control of insect, weed, disease and snail pests. It also protects against noxious weeds and low‑quality seeds.

The Apiary Section facilitates the protection and preservation of Hawaiʻi’s beekeeping industries from bee pests and diseases through statewide strategy, survey, detection, protection, certification, outreach, education, and research.

The employee will work outdoors under various conditions (hot, humid, inclement weather, biting insects) and may need to conduct field work in remote locations independently. Must possess good practical knowledge of biological principles.

Pest Control Technician III: Under general supervision, performs fairly complex sub‑professional duties, supervises pest control aides in support of higher‑level professional activities, and performs other duties as required.

Pest Control Technician IV: Under general supervision, performs a variety of complex sub‑professional duties, may supervise a small group of aides and technicians, and performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Applicants will be placed on the eligible list for all levels for which they are qualified.
  • Legal Authorization to Work: Citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • General

    Experience:

    Three years of progressively responsible work experience requiring reading, comprehending, and applying written instructions; following oral directions; and exercising verbal skills for both levels.
  • Specialized

    Experience:

    Two years for Level III and three years for Level IV in insect or plant pest control involving laboratory procedures, propagating host insects or plants, and collecting and recording data. For Level IV, at least one year must be comparable to Technician III.
  • Non‑Qualifying

    Experience:

    Laboratory work caring only for supplies and equipment is not considered qualifying.
  • Substitutions Allowed: Relevant substitutions apply as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements.
  • License: Some positions require a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment. The immediate vacancy requires it.
  • Special Requirement: Ability to lift, carry, or use equipment, with or without accommodations.
  • Special Requirement: Must possess or obtain within 3 months of hire the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR.
  • Special Requirement: Must conduct field work in remote locations under adverse conditions (hot, humid).
