Position Description
Position SummaryThe Trackhoe Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a trackhoe (hydraulic excavator) to perform excavation, trenching, grading, and material handling on construction projects. This role requires precision control, an understanding of excavation techniques, and the ability to work closely with other crew members to ensure projects are completed to specification, on schedule, and in compliance with safety standards.
Key Duties & Responsibilities- Operate a trackhoe to dig, trench, grade, and move earth, rock, or other materials.
- Load trucks, place pipe, backfill trenches, and assist with utility installation.
- Read and follow grade stakes, project plans, and instructions from supervisors.
- Perform daily pre-operational and post-operational equipment inspections.
- Conduct routine maintenance such as greasing, checking fluid levels, and cleaning the machine.
- Monitor job site conditions and adjust operations to maintain safety and efficiency.
- Coordinate with ground crews and other operators to ensure smooth workflow.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings, especially near personnel, traffic, and other machinery.
- Follow all company safety protocols, DOT/OSHA regulations, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Assist with general labor or other duties when trackhoe operation is not required.
Position Requirements
Qualifications & Requirements- Minimum 1 year of experience operating a trackhoe or similar hydraulic excavator.
- Knowledge of excavation, trenching, and grading techniques.
- Ability to read and follow grade stakes, blueprints, and specifications.
- Understanding of trench safety and underground utility installation.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
- Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks involving bending, kneeling, and climbing into and out of equipment.
- Work in high-noise environments and around heavy machinery.
Ability to work long or irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required by project schedules.
