Position Summary

American Mechanical Services is seeking an experienced HVAC service technician to join our growing Charleston team. This position is intended for a technician with at least two to three years of directly related HVAC experience who can diagnose common system problems, communicate professionally with customers, and complete service work with limited supervision. Our work includes residential and commercial service, repairs, equipment replacement, preventive maintenance, renovations, and mechanical construction throughout Charleston and the surrounding Low country.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in quality workmanship, provides honest recommendations, documents work thoroughly, and wants a long-term position with opportunities to grow.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose residential and commercial HVAC system problems.
  • Perform HVAC maintenance, repairs, replacements, and system evaluations.
  • Diagnose refrigerant, airflow, electrical, drainage, thermostat, and control issues.
  • Troubleshoot motors, capacitors, contractors, control boards, valves, sensors, and other system components.
  • Inspect evaporator coils, condenser coils, blower assemblies, drain systems, ductwork, and electrical components.
  • Perform approved refrigerant recovery, evacuation, charging, and leak-detection work.
  • Evaluate equipment condition and clearly explain findings and repair options.
  • Identify code, safety, comfort, efficiency, or reliability concerns while on site.
  • Prepare accurate material lists and job information.
  • Obtain authorization before completing work outside the approved scope.
  • Complete detailed service reports, photographs, time entries, and required documentation.
  • Coordinate professionally with customers, dispatch, management, contractors, and other trades.
  • Maintain assigned tools, materials, equipment, and company vehicles.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and safe.
  • Follow applicable mechanical codes, manufacturer requirements, refrigerant regulations, and company procedures.
  • Participate in the rotating on-call schedule when assigned.
Required Experience and Qualifications
  • Minimum of two to three years of directly related HVAC experience.
  • Ability to diagnose and complete common HVAC service work with limited supervision.
  • Working knowledge of refrigeration systems, electrical diagnostics, airflow, motors, controls, drainage, and system operation.
  • Ability to use electrical meters, refrigerant gauges, vacuum pumps, recovery equipment, and other HVAC diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to communicate findings and recommendations honestly and professionally.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams, plans, specifications, equipment literature, and manufacturer instructions.
  • EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant work.
  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Dependable attendance and reliable transportation to the assigned reporting location.
  • Ability to use a smartphone or tablet for dispatching, photographs, reports, and job documentation.
  • Ability to safely use ladders, hand tools, power tools, and HVAC service equipment.
  • Ability to work in attics, crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, rooftops, outdoor environments, and other typical service conditions.
  • Professional appearance and conduct.
  • Additional HVAC licenses, manufacturer certifications, or trade credentials are helpful but not required.
Preferred Experience

Experience in any of the following areas is beneficial but not required for every applicant:

  • Residential split systems and heat pumps.
  • Commercial package units and rooftop equipment.
  • Mini-split and multi-zone systems.
  • VRF or VRV systems.
  • Boilers and hydronic equipment.
  • Ventilation, make-up air, and exhaust systems.
  • Commercial controls and building automation.
  • Equipment replacement and system commissioning.
