Job Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical pastoral care to youth, their family members, and staff.
  • Organize pastoral counseling, grief counseling, emergency/crisis visits, death and on‑call visits for youth within the facility.
  • Plan, conduct, and coordinate religious programming, including services, groups, and one‑on‑one counseling (worship services, religious study groups, and special events).
  • Plan and administer programs to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of juveniles within the facility.
  • Provide orientation, guidance, and ongoing support to spiritual development volunteers; work closely with volunteers to coordinate special events such as holiday parties and agency‑wide events.
  • Mobilize the faith‑based community to meet the diverse spiritual needs of youth.
  • Provide and facilitate Critical Incident Services (CISM) and manage all related duties.
  • Represent the chaplaincy in facility, departmental, and multidisciplinary meetings and trainings.
Job Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Chaplaincy, serve as the primary clinical chaplain and pastoral caregiver for an SC DJJ secure facility.

Minimum & Additional Requirements
  • Equivalent of a Master of Divinity degree from an accredited theological school, plus additional clinical pastoral education and/or work experience in a clinical pastoral setting.
  • Ordination as a minister, priest, or rabbi with current ecclesiastical endorsements, or an accepted equivalent of ordination for the respective faith.
  • Knowledge of the emotional and spiritual needs of the client population.
  • Knowledge of pastoral counseling and treatment techniques.
  • Knowledge of the principles of effective human relations.
  • Knowledge of the theoretical concepts and worship practices of different religious traditions.
  • Ability to accurately identify individual psychological problems and suggest appropriate solutions.
  • Ability to plan and administer a program of clinical pastoral care.
  • Ability to organize programs of religious worship and related activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work with incarcerated youth.
  • Must be able to work with youth in custody, control, transportation, or recapture duties as applicable to the Department of Justice. Training will be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Divinity degree from an accredited theological school or equivalent master’s degree, plus additional clinical pastoral education and/or work experience in a clinical pastoral setting.
