Responsibilities
- Operate diesel or gas‑powered buses, cars, or vans to transport students to and from home, field trips, health care facilities, and other required destinations. Ensure safe, punctual, and compliant student transportation.
- Perform pre‑trip inspections each day, verifying vehicle safety, cleanliness, and that students are properly loaded and secured per state and federal regulations. Account for all students and conduct post‑trip inspections, reporting any mechanical issues immediately.
- Maintain bus cleanliness and comfort: wash vehicle, keep lights, mirrors, windows, and interior tidy, remove trash, and perform light routine maintenance. Properly maintain emergency equipment (first aid kit, fire extinguisher, body fluid kit, reflectors, and web cutter). Refuel and check fluid levels as needed.
- Assist with student behavior management, complete behavior reports, and communicate with parents, principals, and staff regarding student needs or concerns. Supervise students at all times.
- Update student information (address, phone number, pick‑up permission) and keep bus notebooks current with route description, pick‑up permission, student contacts, emergency action plans, route schedule, late parent forms, behavior incident reports, and medication forms.
- Oversee transport of student medications, distribute snacks and water, assist with loading/unloading luggage, and ensure proper transfer and sign‑off of medications, messages, and monies.
- Current and valid CDL, School Bus Certificate, and DOT Physical.
- Acceptable ten‑year driving history from SC DMV under State Fleet Management (SFM) and SC Dept. of Education – Transportation (SCDOE‑T) guidelines and policies.
- Experience in operation or maintenance of motorized vehicles.
- Valid SC Driver's License with proper endorsements for school bus operation and current DOT Health Card.
- Good driving record with no more than four current points for violations.
- Successful completion of Defensive Driving Course (DDC) as required by State Fleet Management regulations.
- Ability to work with clients who are deaf, blind, or sensory multi‑disabled.
- Availability for overnight travel, weekend work, and heavy lifting (up to 125 lb). Must pass and maintain the Physical Performance Test (PPT) mandated by federal regulations for all drivers.
