Laboratory Technician - Vet Anatomy

St. George’s University invites applicants for the position of Laboratory Technician within the department of Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology within the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Objective

The laboratory technicians of St George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine are dedicated to upholding the mission of providing an international, culturally diverse environment in which students learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for graduate training in the Veterinary profession.

To provide skilled technical support in the veterinary anatomy laboratory by preparing, maintaining, and operating anatomical specimens, equipment, and teaching materials, ensuring a safe, efficient, and high-quality learning environment for students and faculty.

To assist faculty and students in both teaching and research activities within the veterinary anatomy laboratory by providing technical expertise in specimen preparation, imaging, lab organization, and compliance with safety and ethical standards.

Essential Functions
  • Veterinary Anatomy Laboratory Sessions:
    Participate in setting up and preparing laboratory sessions in the veterinary anatomy lab.
  • Make anatomical models (prosections), dissection tools, and teaching aids available to teaching faculty and students.
  • Ensure that the laboratory is adequately equipped and ready for each session.
  • Collaborate with faculty members and other laboratory staff to enhance the learning experience of the DVM students.
  • Support other departments in setting up the lab sessions.
  • Preparation of reagents and solutions required for preservation of the anatomical specimens.
  • Research:
    Assist faculty in conducting research activities including collection of samples, preparation of reagents and solutions required for fixation and processing of samples.
  • Assist in handling and restraining the live animals under the supervision of veterinarians/faculty.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of the research utensils and equipment.
  • Procurement and Record Keeping:
    Receive, catalog, and organize animal anatomical specimens for teaching and research.
  • Maintain an inventory of specimens, ensuring their proper storage and preservation.
  • Coordinate with suppliers to procure and replenish specimens, including traveling to local abattoirs and other relevant facilities to obtain samples.
  • Health and Safety:
    Follow and enforce health and safety protocols in the laboratory.
  • Ensure that safety equipment and supplies are readily available and in good condition.
  • Train and guide students on safe laboratory practices.
  • Maintain accurate records of specimen usage and safety-related incidents.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to curriculum development.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to creating and maintaining a safe learning environment to promote the education of DVM and pre-veterinary students.
  • Creation of the teaching materials:
    Collaborate with faculty to develop and implement practical exercises that align with the curriculum.
  • Communicate effectively with faculty and students regarding laboratory activities and schedules.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain laboratory equipment as needed.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to curriculum development.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree or Bachelor of Sciences in biology/chemistry/general agriculture/animal sciences/natural sciences or related field.
  • Experience working with animals in a clinical, teaching and/or research setting.
  • Animal cadaver dissection experience is strongly desired.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to drive pickup truck.
