Responsibilities- Provide educational supports through supervision and instruction for English language learner (ELL) students under the direction of licensed staff.
- Complete routine clerical tasks for teachers and serve as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with limited English-speaking students.
- Administer tests and language assessments under the guidance of a classroom teacher or resource teacher to evaluate language ability.
- Confer with teachers, parents and/or appropriate community agency personnel for evaluating student progress and implementing objectives.
- Perform record keeping and basic clerical functions, scheduling, copying, etc. to support teachers and maintain student files in the students’ primary language.
- Record student progress in language acquisition and maintain updated records.
- Translate verbal and written communication to assist students, staff, and parents in effective communication.
- Support students in developing positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults.
- Evaluate situations and direct to appropriate personnel for resolution as needed.
- Assist other personnel to support them in completing work activities related to the ESL program.
- Participate in meetings to share information and improve skills and knowledge.
- Assist with transportation needs of students, including walking them to and from the bus and arranging transportation as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor within the scope of the job.
- Experience
Required:
Prior job-related experience, paid or volunteer, with school age children. - Education Required: Completed associate or higher degree, completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 college quarter hours or more) or demonstrated knowledge of reading, writing, and mathematics through a formal state or local assessment.
- Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing
Required:
Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance and First Aid/CPR card.
- Designated language (written and oral).
- Principles of child development.
- Instructional practices.
- Performing basic clerical functions and basic arithmetic calculations.
- Operating standard office equipment and computer programs (email, system applications, word processing, etc.).
- Communicating effectively in English, both verbally and in writing (spelling, grammar, punctuation).
- Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, and policies; understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Rapidly learn methods and materials used in various instructional situations; work as a self-starter or in a team; plan, prioritize, and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
- Handle multiple projects and tasks to meet deadlines; interact with people of different age groups and cultural backgrounds.
- Work under the guidance and direction of the teacher with access to assistance and consultation.
- Collaborate with teachers in assessment, curriculum support, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors, and social growth of students.
- Provide instructional support to students in large groups, small groups, and one-on-one situations.
- Administer language assessments under the guidance of a classroom or resource teacher.
- Confer with teachers, parents, and community personnel to evaluate progress and implement objectives.
- Maintain student files and provide classroom materials in the students’ primary language.
