Job Purpose Statement

The position of School Counselor is for the purpose of coordinating a comprehensive counseling program for all students in the district based on the Oregon Framework for School Counseling Programs and its components (Guidance Curriculum, Individual Planning, Responsive Services, System Support, and Student Advocacy). It also provides services to all students in academic, career, community involvement, and personal/social domains in conjunction with school staff, parents, the community, and the students themselves.

Job Functions
  • Implement the Guidance Curriculum Component through instructional skills and structured group sessions.
    • Facilitate instruction of guidance lessons.
    • Encourage staff involvement and provide resources and in‑service training.
  • Implement the Individual Planning Component by guiding individuals and groups of students and parents through plan development that leads to educational and career success.
    • Help students plan toward success through goal‑setting and organizational skills with parents and staff.
    • Provide accurate interpretation of assessment data and present relevant unbiased information.
  • Implement the Responsive Services Component through individual and small group counseling, consultation, and referral.
    • Provide counseling for individuals and small groups of students with identified needs/concerns.
    • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and others to meet student needs.
    • Assist with referrals in collaboration with parents, administrators, teachers, and school personnel.
  • Implement the System Support Component through counseling program management and support for other educational programs.
    • Administer and evaluate a comprehensive and balanced counseling program with school staff.
    • Provide support for other school programs and carry out “fair share responsibilities” as appropriate.
  • Implement the Student Advocacy Component to achieve student success.
    • Work proactively to remove personal and social barriers to learning.
    • Empower students to advocate for themselves and others.
  • Fulfill professional responsibilities.
  • Use communication and positive interaction with the entire school community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing growth.
  • Possess professional and responsible work habits.
  • Follow ethical and legal standards, promote cultural diversity and inclusivity.
Job Requirements – Qualifications
  • Prior job‑related experience preferred.
  • Proper TSPC Licensure with School Counselor endorsement required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
  • Ability to speak a second language preferred.

Skills, knowledge and abilities required:

  • Effective collaboration with teachers, students, and parents; crisis intervention; counseling; data interpretation; communication.
  • Knowledge of assessment instruments, relevant education codes, state and district policies.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods, complete case studies, develop education plans and profiles; flexibility; work under time constraints; work independently.
  • Physical abilities: lifting, reaching, handling, talking, hearing, visual acuity.

Terms of Employment: 192 days per year. Salary established by collective bargaining agreement.

Performance will be evaluated according to the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Licensed Staff Personnel.
