Educational Assistant – Instructional Assistant

Job

Position Summary
  • The Instructional Assistant provides educational supports through supervision and instruction of students under the direction of licensed staff.
  • Assistance to the licensed teacher is achieved through the planning and implementation of assigned instructional programs for students who are not in categorical programs (e.g., special education, ELL).
  • Complete routine clerical tasks and support classroom activities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Prior paid or volunteer job‑related experience with school‑age children.
  • Completed associate’s degree or higher, or at least two years of higher‑education study (72 college quarter hours or more) with demonstrated knowledge in reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Criminal justice fingerprinting.
  • Valid first aid/CPR certification.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Principles of child development and instructional practices.
  • Proficiency with standard office equipment and common computer applications (email, word processing, database, spreadsheet).
  • Basic clerical functions and arithmetic calculations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication in English.
  • Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
  • Rapidly learn materials and methods used in varied instructional settings.
  • Work independently or as a team member.
  • Plan, prioritize, and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Interact with students and adults from diverse cultures.
Essential Job Functions
  • Work under guidance of the licensed teacher with regular monitoring.
  • Assist teachers in assessment, curriculum support, student interaction, and safety.
  • Provide instructional support and tutoring in large groups, small groups, and one‑on‑one settings.
  • Maintain records and perform basic clerical duties (e.g., scheduling, copying, filing).
  • Confer with teachers to provide feedback on student performance.
  • Help students develop positive relationships with peers and adults.
  • Promote student safety using district guidelines.
  • Monitor students to ensure a safe learning environment.
  • Respond to escalating/emergency situations, call for help, and assist until assistance arrives.
  • Evaluate situations and direct to appropriate personnel.
Other Job Functions
  • Cross‑train in various school functions and assist personnel as needed.
  • Maintain classroom equipment, materials, and student files.
  • Administer first aid and medical assistance as required.
  • Consult with teachers, parents, and community agencies to evaluate student progress.
  • Participate in meetings to share information and improve skills.
  • Assist with student transportation needs, including bus supervision.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Physical Requirements
  • Sit, stand, or walk for prolonged periods.
  • Listen and converse in noisy environments.
  • Use precise finger and hand movements (e.g., keyboarding).
    Reach for and handle objects.
  • Use near, distance, peripheral vision, and eye focus.
  • Focus on a computer screen.
  • Occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, lift, or move up to 40 pounds.

  • Adhere to confidentiality policies regarding staff, students, and parents.
  • Dress professionally.
  • Exercise prudent judgment.
  • Work independently on routine duties.
  • Follow all district policies and procedures.

  • Participate in required meetings and trainings.
  • If bilingual, provide interpretation, translation, or communication in the second language.
  • Model respectful working and learning environments.

All employees hired into a position not requiring licensure must be fingerprinted and have a criminal history check completed. The cost is $71.50 and is the responsibility of the employee. This employment is considered probationary pending return of the criminal records check from the FBI and Oregon State Police through the Oregon Department of Education.
