Position Summary
The Instructional Assistant provides educational supports through supervision and instruction of students under the direction of licensed staff. Assistance to the licensed teacher is achieved through the planning and implementation of assigned instructional programs for students who are not in categorical programs (e.g., special education, ELL) and completing routine clerical tasks.
Minimum Qualifications- Experience
Required:
Prior job‑related experience, paid or volunteer, with school‑age children. - Education Required:
Completed associate’s degree or higher, or at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 college quarter hours or more) or a rigorous standard of quality demonstrated through a formal state or local academic assessment. - Licenses and
Certifications:
Criminal justice fingerprint, clear first aid/CPR card. - Proficiency in English and Spanish (oral and written).
- Principles of child development and instructional practices.
- Operating standard office equipment and computer programs (email, word processing, database, spreadsheet, desktop publishing).
- Basic clerical functions and arithmetic calculations.
- Effective communication in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Reading, interpreting, and applying rules, regulations, and policies.
- Following verbal and written instructions.
- Rapidly learning methods and materials used in a variety of instructional situations.
- Working independently or as part of a team.
- Planning, prioritizing, and completing assignments with minimal supervision.
- Handling multiple projects to meet deadlines.
- Interacting with persons of different age groups and cultural backgrounds.
- Work under the guidance and direction of the licensed teacher with access to assistance and consultation and regular monitoring.
- Assist teachers in assessment, supporting curriculum, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors, and enhancing social growth of students in the school setting.
- Provide instructional support and tutoring to students in large groups, small groups, and one‑on‑one situations.
- Perform record‑keeping and basic clerical functions (e.g., scheduling, copying to support teachers in maintaining student files and providing classroom materials).
- Confere with teachers to provide feedback on student performance in instructional responsibilities.
- Help support students in developing positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults.
- Promote student safety through the application of the district's student management and safety guidelines.
- Monitor individual students, classroom, and/or playground activities to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Recognize an escalating/emergency situation, call for help, and defuse or assist until help arrives.
- Evaluate situations to take appropriate action and/or direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Cross‑train in a variety of school functions and assist other personnel as required.
- Maintain classroom equipment, materials, and student files to ensure availability.
- Administer first aid and medical assistance to ill or injured children.
- Confere, under teacher supervision, with teachers, parents, and community agencies to evaluate student progress and implement objectives.
- Participate in meetings to share information and improve skills and knowledge.
- Assist with transportation needs of students, including supervision to and from the bus, and arranging transportation.
- Perform other duties assigned by supervisor within the scope of the job.
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for prolonged periods; talk and hear conversations in a potentially noisy environment.
- Use precise control of fingers and hand movement, often in repetitive motion such as keyboarding.
- Reach for and handle objects, and use close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- Focus on a computer screen; bend, stoop, kneel, lift, and/or move up to 40 pounds on occasion.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance; follow absence reporting protocols.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding staff, students, and parents.
- Dress in a professional and appropriate manner for the assignment.
- Exercise prudent judgment.
- Work independently on routine duties.
- Follow all district policies and procedures.
- Utilize district electronic systems and applications relevant to the position.
- Participate in required meetings and trainings.
- Use translation or interpretation in the second language if bilingual.
- Model a respectful working and learning environment.
