Position: Health Assistant / Media Assistant

School Health Assistant

The School Health Assistant assists school personnel with specific student health issues and performs clerical duties for the Health Room. This position handles sensitive and confidential issues and requires excellent communication skills.

Qualifications
  • Prior job-related experience with increasing responsibility.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint credential.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certificates.
Essential Job Functions
  • Provides basic first aid and emergency care for illness or injury and refers emergency situations to district nurse, administration, parents, appropriate emergency medical personnel and support personnel.
  • Monitors student health status during periods of short‑term rest or recovery in the health room.
  • Collects and maintains data and records on student health issues as required by the district, state, and federal regulations.
  • Provides delegated health care tasks for students with chronic health problems.
  • Where appropriate, administers medication to students following District and school protocols under the direction and training of the school nurse.
  • Keeps accurate records of medication brought to the health room.
  • Notifies nurse and/or parents of medication‑related updates or changes such as orders, treatments, practitioner orders, needed refills/pick‑ups, expired medication, etc.
  • Assists other school personnel with health screenings.
  • Prepares medications, supplies, and precautions, consults/communicates with teacher and assesses need for staff training for field trips.
  • Monitors students in a variety of settings (e.g., classroom, transportation, field trips) for the purpose of providing care as defined by student health plans and monitoring of student needs.
  • Maintains and updates student health records.
  • Collects immunization and tuberculosis data.
  • Composes reports and documents for administrators and other school staff regarding student health issues.
  • Manages health‑related referrals from other school staff members.
  • Processes documents and materials for the purpose of disseminating information to appropriate parties.
  • Orders necessary supplies for the health room and other materials as requested.
  • Communicates effectively with parents related to student health issues.
  • Assists with physically transferring students from wheelchairs, mats, or other positioning equipment.
Other Job Functions
  • Cross‑trains in a variety of office functions and assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities within scope of pay range and job description.
  • Assists in general office duties to include answering phones, directing calls, providing proper information, taking messages, preparing and distributing forms and correspondence and ordering supplies.
  • Performs selected tasks from School Health Management Plan as delegated and supervised by the Registered Nurse.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

  • Maintaining regular and punctual attendance; follows site and/or district protocol for reporting absences.
  • Dresses in a professional and appropriate manner for the assignment and the work setting.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding information about students, staff, and parents.
  • Exercises prudent judgment and works independently in the performance of routine duties.
  • Utilizes the District's electronic systems and applications only as related to the position.
  • Follows all District policies and work procedures, as well as federal and state regulations.
  • Participates in required meetings and trainings related to the position.
  • If employee is bilingual, may be requested to interpret, translate documents, and/or communicate orally in the second language.
  • Cultivates and models a respectful working and learning environment.
