Camp Health Officer

The Camp Health Officer serves as the primary onsite health authority at Camp Collins and is responsible for maintaining a safe and healthy environment for campers and staff. This role manages daily health center operations, responds to illnesses and injuries, administers medications, maintains health records, completes incident documentation, and communicates with camp leadership and families regarding health concerns.

The Camp Health Officer supports risk management, emergency preparedness, and YMCA-CW policy compliance as part of the camp leadership team.

This position provides first response and health support services within established camp protocols and training, and determines when escalation to emergency services or external medical care is needed. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Health Services and Medical Response
  • Assess and respond to camper and staff illnesses, injuries, and health concerns and determine appropriate next steps in care within RN scope of practice, established protocols, and training.
  • Provide first aid, health monitoring, and routine camp health services as needed.
  • Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications in accordance with physician instructions, parental authorization, YMCA-CW policies, and camp procedures.
  • Monitor campers and staff recovering from illness or injury and determine when additional medical evaluation or treatment is necessary.
  • Coordinate and implement escalation of care, including communication with emergency services, healthcare providers, and families when appropriate.
  • Monitor communicable illnesses and implement preventative measures as needed.
  • Serve as the primary health resource for camp staff and leadership.
  • Health Center Administration
  • Oversee daily operations of the Camp Health Center.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential camper and staff health records and medication documentation.
  • Ensure proper storage, administration, and documentation of medications.
  • Maintain medical supplies, equipment, and inventory levels.
  • Ensure health center operations comply with YMCA-CW standards and applicable regulations.
  • Incident Reporting and Risk Management
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies and critical incidents.
  • Complete timely and accurate incident reports and required documentation.
  • Communicate significant injuries, illnesses, incidents, and emerging health concerns to the Camp Director and leadership staff.
  • Identify and proactively address health and safety risks throughout camp operations.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness planning and response procedures.
  • Communication and Leadership
  • Maintain regular and proactive communication with the Camp Director regarding health operations, incidents, trends, and concerns.
  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with parents and guardians regarding camper health concerns when appropriate.
  • Participate in leadership meetings and support overall camp operations.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive camp environment for all campers and staff.
  • Complete an end-of-season report summarizing health center operations, incident trends, inventory needs, and recommendations.
  • General Responsibilities

  • Build positive relationships with campers, families, volunteers, and staff.
  • Always maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Attend and actively participate in required trainings and meetings.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing in the state of Oregon (or ability to obtain Oregon licensure prior to start date).
  • Current Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED certification.
  • Current First Aid certification.
  • Ability to successfully pass YMCA-CW background screening requirements.
  • Ability to reside onsite for the duration of employment.
  • Strong communication, organization, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and accurate records.
  • Ability to make independent health-related decisions in a residential camp setting within established protocols, training, and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a camp, school health, pediatric, urgent care, emergency, or community health setting.
  • Experience working with children and adolescents.
  • Experience administering medications and maintaining health records.
  • Experience in outdoor education or residential camp environments.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Additional certifications (LPN, EMT, WFR, etc.) are not required but may be considered relevant experience.
