Summary of Job Purpose and Function
The primary purpose of the Area Chief of Staff (ACOS) is to lead, develop, and manage associate veterinarians in their hospitals to attract, retain, and engage doctors who deliver quality care. The ACOS drives the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) in assigned hospitals, ensuring every pet receives consistent care that aligns with Banfield’s six domains of quality: safe, effective, patient/client-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care.
Responsibilities
- Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
- Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits, and manage controlled substance inventory for relief doctors.
- Own doctor engagement and retention by assessing risk, implementing proactive retention strategies, and fostering a supportive community.
- Provide effective medical leadership, fostering an inclusive and collaborative work environment in partnership with Practice Managers.
- Validate the clinical skillset and alignment with quality standards of doctors, veterinary assistants, and technicians through record reviews, audits, and event reviews.
- Spend a percentage of time in a clinical role depending on hospital count, direct reports, and productivity, as defined with DVQ.
- Oversee the coaching program for newly hired veterinarians, ensuring an engaging experience and developing clinical, surgical, and dental skills.
- Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent and act as a brand ambassador in the local veterinary community.
- Deliver an excellent hospital experience to externs, student job participants, and candidates during hospital observations.
- Work with associate doctors to achieve productivity goals through high‑quality medicine, preventive care focus, and client partnership.
- Deliver veterinary operations KPIs and partner with Practice Managers to develop, execute, and revise plans to achieve targeted KPIs.
- Ensure compliance with Banfield’s clinical essentials, government regulations, and veterinary industry standards through audits and event reviews.
- Create and execute timely plans to resolve identified gaps, champion preventive care culture, and drive a “say yes” environment.
- Resolve client complaints related to medical standards of care and manage the medical equipment inventory with the Director of Veterinary Quality.

- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree.
- Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure in all applicable state boards.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery practice.
- Must obtain state‑controlled substance and federal DEA certification within 3 months of employment, and USDA accreditation within 3 months.
- Salary range: $136,000 – $196,000 (dependent on experience, skill level, education, and geographic location).
