Position Overview
The Diesel & CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) Equipment Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of vehicles and equipment powered by diesel and CNG engines. This position ensures that fleet vehicles and machinery operate safely and efficiently, supporting the organization’s operational needs.
Responsibilities- Perform routine maintenance and scheduled service on diesel and CNG vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and fuel system issues using diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Repair and replace defective parts, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and fuel systems.
- Conduct safety inspections and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Maintain accurate service records and documentation for all repairs and maintenance performed.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and perform field repairs as necessary.
- Collaborate with fleet managers and other mechanics to prioritize repairs and schedule service.
- Order and inventory parts, supplies, and lubricants required for maintenance and repairs.
- Stay current with new technologies and procedures related to diesel and CNG engines.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training in automotive or diesel technology preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years experience in diesel and/or CNG equipment maintenance and repair.
- Valid driver’s license: commercial driver’s license (CDL) may be required for some positions.
- Certifications such as ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) in diesel engines or CNG systems are a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagrams.
- Physical ability to lift heavy components, work in confined spaces, and stand for extended periods.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, and computerized maintenance systems.
- Knowledge of diesel and CNG engine operation, fuel systems, emissions controls, and safety standards.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with team members and supervisors.
- Organizational skills for managing multiple tasks and prioritizing repairs.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.
- Knowledge of welding and fabrication.
The Diesel & CNG Equipment Mechanic typically works in a garage, workshop, or field environment. The role may require occasional overtime, weekend hours, and on-call availability for emergency repairs. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required to ensure safety.
