Engineering & Maintenance Manager

Job Overview

Under the direction of the Plant Manager, the Engineering & Maintenance Manager directs the activities of Project Engineering, Process Engineering, Building Maintenance, Security, and Maintenance Operations. Incumbent is responsible for all Divisional, Plant and Departmental goals, including reliability, cost reduction, waste reduction, safety, quality and sanitation improvements, downtime reduction, and ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures. The position monitors progress towards goals and ensures capital projects and other resources are utilized to provide maximum facility benefits.

• Manage day-to-day activities of the Maintenance department, Process Engineering, Project Engineering, and outside building contractors; set goals, priorities, monitor progress, and evaluate performance of staff.
• Create an empowered environment ensuring the Engineering & Maintenance organization and its people understand business goals and have resources and support.
• Prepare and manage the Capital Asset Acquisition Proposal (CAAP) annual budget and ensure projects are properly planned, funded, and completed as scheduled.
• Initiate design changes and modifications to improve machine efficiency, facilitate packaging design changes, reduce costs, and expand equipment capacity for new products.
• Develop strategic capital plans to replace worn equipment, expand capacity, modify or replace packaging equipment, and increase productivity for new products.
• Coordinate selection, design, and layout of processing and packaging machinery to ensure efficiency and space utilization.
• Ensure all engineering and maintenance processes are documented (Capital startup plans, SOPs, DOPs, run documents) and implement changes.
• Implement preventive maintenance programs and establish a proficient maintenance stores procurement and inventory control system.
• Meet all regulatory requirements for waste disposal, air emissions, and facility permits; file required documentation with federal, state, and local agencies.
• Ensure safety and security measures, including sprinkler systems, fire-fighting equipment, and internal alarms, meet fire code and insurance requirements.
• Create and manage operating and capital budgets with leadership teams; monitor expenses; participate in business planning and budgeting; develop cost containment strategies.
• Provide mentoring, coaching, and technology development for staff; maintain strong cross-functional leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.

• Relevant Engineering degree (ME, CHemE, IE, EE).
• 7-10 years manufacturing experience in food processing, pharmaceutical, or chemical process with progressive leadership experience.
• Shop-floor and information systems experience; PC, PLC, robotics.
• Process engineering and analytical process mapping experience.
• Knowledge of CMMS and preventive maintenance practices.
• Experience in food processing is an asset.
