The individual in this position performs a variety of tasks related to the receiving of refuse material from the general public, businesses and private waste haulers; assessment and collection of disposal fees and recording of solid waste statistical information at the disposal site which may be the transfer station, recycling center or landfill. Essential duties include:
- Greets visitors; provides information and assistance; takes messages; answers telephone and email
- Correspondence; refers to appropriate personnel; generally, the first point of contact.
- Receives customer complaints and inquiries; resolves or forwards to supervisor.
- Maintains security by way of locking/unlocking gates; keeps unauthorized persons out and maintains visuals on security cameras. Reports violations.
- Inspects incoming loads for non-acceptable items.
- Weighs loaded and empty residential and commercial vehicles on computerized platform scale to determine gross and tare weights.
- Calculates disposal charges based on fee schedule, visual inspection of load material and net weight of vehicles; collects the appropriate fee.
- Searches, locates, and retrieves customer account/vehicle information; verifies account status and accuracy of information to ensure correct amounts and process for payment.
- Responds to customer inquiries; conducts surveys; explains policies, procedures, and regulations regarding the disposal and recycling process, of day-to-day landfill operations and the fee schedule system in person or over the phone.
- Reads, computes, and records daily fee transactions of cash drawer and verifies cash on hand; sorts, counts and totals cash and check payments.
- Provides customer service to vehicles in the queue outside the scale house when necessary; reports stalled vehicles and accidents to the supervisor.
- Maintains neatness of scale house office area; secures the scale house and arms the security system at the end of each shift.
- Receives or retrieves, sorts, and distributes incoming and outgoing mail and shipments.
- Organizes and files all departmental correspondence, documents and other significant forms.
- Orders office and operating supplies and maintains inventory.
- Ensures copier, fax and other related office equipment are in working order and fully stocked each day.
- Prepares monthly reports & invoices.
- Performs other related office duties as assigned.
- Employee must have the visual ability to observe and detect dangerous obstacles, other vehicles or equipment, pedestrians, and a computer screen and printed materials.
- Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment on a daily basis.
- The work is typically in an office environment with moderate noise levels and controlled temperature conditions while mostly sitting, bending, pulling, and reaching.
- Employee will occasionally lift and carry loads or objects unassisted of up to fifteen pounds.
- Must have good judgement and the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations remaining helpful and pleasant at all times.
- Must have a professional appearance, positive demeanor, and treat others with dignity and respect responding promptly to their needs.
- Must have clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interpret such information.
- Basic computing skills including usage of communications, inventory, ticketing systems.
- Proficiency in the use of computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel and email.
- Proficiency in customer service skills via telephone, in-person contact, or in written form.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum two years of related experience to include customer service and cash handling.
Please note that employment is through the City of Griffin, but the location of the landfill is 575 Shoal Creek Rd. in Griffin.
This is an hourly position at the rate of $21.42 per hour with a competitive benefits package including a generous pension plan.
