Research Technician - Chavez
Position Summary:
This is a temporary position that will be responsible for assisting and supporting the Associate Professor of Horticulture with applied research and extension programs.
- Assist project director and team members with project design and implementation; conduct research projects by performing technical duties in laboratory, field, or greenhouse environments.
- Follow assigned protocols, identify and report abnormal or unexpected results, and maintain accurate and detailed records of data obtained from experiments.
- Perform greenhouse maintenance and related activities including potting media, planting, fertilization, and irrigation.
- Collect data from field, greenhouse, and laboratory studies; conduct appropriate statistical analyses; prepare data presentations and technical reports.
- Maintain and accurately keep an inventory of supplies, chemicals, and pesticides; ensure compliance with UGA, EPD, and EPA regulations.
- Manage and operate equipment systems common to the research area; calibrate and synchronize equipment to achieve desired results.
- Maintain and manage field plots for research purposes, including growing peaches, breeding nurseries, and standard propagation techniques.
- Assist with setting up and overseeing field trials, greenhouse, and laboratory applied research in cooperation with industry and faculty.
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience in horticulture, plant pathology, or a related field.
- Valid Georgia driver’s license and pesticide applicator’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Area‑specific certification and/or training.
- Knowledge of biological science principles (e.g., plant pathology, plant physiology, entomology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics).
- Practical knowledge of research procedures and instrumentation.
- Experience with statistical analyses and software packages.
- Knowledge of safe laboratory procedures.
- Lift up to 40 pounds.
- Work outside under high heat and humidity.
- Regular walking, bending, and other physical exertion.
- Agile hand‑eye coordination.
- Driving as needed.
