The individual in this position is responsible for supervising the shop and mechanics. He or she shall both perform and ensure that others perform maintenance, preventative maintenance, and repair tasks efficiently and effectively. He or she will provide technical expertise, manage mechanics, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and perform diagnostics on trucks and heavy‑equipment.
Essential Duties- Coordinates, supervises and organizes the day-to‑day operations of the truck and equipment shop.
- Assigns daily work orders to mechanics, prioritizes tasks, and ensures timely completion of repairs.
- Monitors work progress and provides technical guidance, and assists with repairs.
- Inspects completed work to ensure it meets quality standards and satisfactory expectations.
- Develops and implements shop procedures to improve efficiency and quality of work.
- Provides technical support and training to mechanics on advanced vehicle systems and diagnostics.
- Utilizes advanced diagnostic tools and techniques to identify and resolve complex vehicle issues.
- Must stay updated on the latest advancements in the truck and heavy equipment industry and integrate new practices into shop operations.
- Addresses and resolves any quality issues quickly and efficiently.
- Ensures a clean and organized work area is maintained to prevent accidents and improve productivity.
- Reviews work orders after job completion for accuracy.
- Maintains accurate records related to vehicles, parts, and service history.
- Prepares and files weekly and monthly vehicle maintenance reports.
- Troubleshoots vehicle and equipment operations problems; diagnoses problems and makes repairs.
- Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment according to standard schedules.
- Transports tools and equipment to perform field repairs.
- Adjusts, repairs, or replaces parts and equipment.
- Welds and fabricates parts as needed.
- Repairs vehicle A/C units.
- Delivers vehicles to dealers for warranty repairs.
- Attends safety meetings and trainings.
- Maintains tools and equipment.
- Maintains a safe and tidy shop.
- Performs the duties of the superintendent in his or her absence.
- Responds to after‑hours calls as needed.
- Hires, trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates and disciplines personnel.
- Performs related duties.
- Approximately 80% of the work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is performed in a vehicle repair shop. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work may be performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
- Employee must have the visual ability to distinguish between shades of colors, detect dangerous obstacles, other vehicles or equipment, and pedestrians.
- The work involves pushing, pulling, manipulating, and/or lifting or carrying loads of up to 100 pounds unassisted.
- Knowledge of vehicle and equipment operation and maintenance principles.
- Knowledge of vehicle and equipment diagnosis and repair principles.
- Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
- Skill in the use of a variety of tools and equipment used in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in welding.
- Skill in supervising the work of personnel.
- Skill in troubleshooting and identifying problems and in devising related solutions.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Must be detail‑oriented and have well‑developed problem‑solving abilities.
- Must be proficient in using advanced diagnostic tools and repair software.
- Must have good judgement, diplomacy and tact with the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations while remaining helpful and pleasant at all times.
