The individual in this position will use and maintain a variety of Landfill equipment to perform tasks related to day-to-day Landfill operations. This position does not require a CDL. Essential duties include:

  • Maintains roads and grading of landfill site.
  • Ensures proper erosion control of landfill areas.
  • Compacts waste into landfill space to ensure proper voids are filled.
  • Spreads, pushes, digs, moves, covers, and compacts materials.
  • Covers built slopes with dirt.
  • Operates a variety of heavy compaction and earthmoving equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Compactor to chew up, break up, and smash materials as small as possible.
    • Compactor to dig up, move, replace material (building slopes and benches) and compact material.
    • D8 Dozer to push material and feed it to the compactor.
    • D5 Dozer to cover built slopes with dirt, push yard debris material and mulch, to spread dirt, rock and material, and to keep roads properly graded.
    • Excavator to dig up/load the shredder, dig up dirt, rock and material, dig out trucks, and to install pipes and clean ditches.
    • Shredder to chew up and shred material.
  • Grades site, topography and drainage features.
  • Monitors customer activities to assure compliance with established rules and regulations; operates radio and two-way communications as needed to alert operators of activity or waste loads.
  • Performs manual tasks associated with landfill operations which may include cutting grass, cleaning grounds areas, loading/unloading, picking up litter/debris, or lifting/moving heavy materials.
  • Checks equipment daily and reports failures to Landfill Superintendent promptly. Records inspections and routine service logs.
  • Provides service to equipment when feasible and checks all repaired equipment before putting it back into service.
  • Performs job site safety procedures to ensure and maintain a safe workspace at all times.
  • May assist in performing scale-house duties or general office duties.
  • Enforces City policies on the use of the landfill.
  • Performs related job duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
  • Employee must have the visual ability and acceptable hearing to observe and detect dangerous obstacles, other vehicles or equipment, and pedestrians.
  • The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, dust, dirt, grease and irritating chemicals; therefore, the use of provided protective devices such as hard hat, safety glasses, safety-toe boots, hearing protection, gloves, safety vest, etc., is required.
  • The work is typically performed while mostly sitting or driving; however, bending, crouching, stooping, standing and walking are frequent.
  • The work involves constant vibration due to equipment that pushes, pulls, manipulates and carries extremely heavy loads.
  • The work will be performed in all forms of weather that may be very hot, cold, extreme or inclement.
  • Knowledge of landfill operations.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety techniques, and safety/health rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of guidelines and regulations governing separation and disposal of various items typically disposed of in a landfill environment.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.
  • Ability to assess landfill materials and to identify materials that may require special handling.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and reference markers establishing levels and grades.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate machinery/ equipment associated with performance of duties.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with customers, members of the general public, and fellow co-workers.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in maintenance, construction, repair work, or related occupations.
  • Experience in the operation of stated heavy compaction and earthmoving equipment.

** Though infrequent, in the case of an extreme event or emergency maintenance, employee will be required to report to report back to work. This may be after regular working hours to include nights, weekends and holidays.**
