TheOpportunity
The Worship Music Leader will report to the Pastor and primarily provide piano and/or organ music for Sunday worship, while also directing and accompanying our Chancel Choir and supporting our Handbell Choir during their active seasons. This role includes planning worship music, supporting congregational singing, and coordinating occasional guest musicians as needed.
What You'll DoPLAN MUSIC FOR WORSHIP
- Collaborate with the Pastor and Steward of Worship on worship hymn selection and ensure music supports the overall direction and flow of worship
- Select preludes, postludes, incidental music, and Chancel Choir music and share by established deadlines
- Maintain the church's music library and be mindful of applicable copyright requirements
- Select and schedule guest musicians, as resources allow
- Help explore opportunities to incorporate additional musicians and musical variety over time
- Coordinate with the church office on instrument tuning and maintenance needs
PLAY & LEAD WORSHIP MUSIC
- Serve as the primary pianist and/or organist for worship services
- Prepare, accompany, and direct the Chancel Choir for scheduled worship participation
- Support the Handbell Choir with music, scheduling, and worship coordination
- Bring ideas for strengthening and supporting both ensembles over time
- Incorporate volunteer musicians, vocalists, and occasional guest musicians when appropriate
- Communicate rehearsal and performance schedules clearly
- You enjoy leading and encouraging volunteer musicians
- You communicate clearly, plan ahead, and follow through
- You work well with people of varying musical experience
- You collaborate well and are open to feedback
- You appreciate traditional church music while being open to thoughtful new ideas
- You bring patience, flexibility, and a solution-oriented approach
We're more interested in finding the right person than checking every box, but ideal candidates will bring:
- Proficiency in piano and/or organ is required
- Experience directing a choir or vocal ensemble
- Experience with handbells, or a willingness to develop familiarity with them
- Ability to accompany and support congregational singing
Experience selecting and preparing music for worship - Strong planning, organization, and communication skills
- Familiarity with Christian worship
- An established network of local musicians is a plus
This is a part-time, year-round position with a seasonally variable schedule, averaging approximately 4–8 hours per week across the year.
The schedule generally includes:
- Sunday morning worship
- Music planning and communication
- Chancel Choir and Handbell Choir rehearsals during their active seasons
- Planning and preparation for seasonal and special services
The role is more active from fall through spring and lighter during the summer. Some planning and preparation may be completed remotely. Worship, rehearsals, and scheduled musical activities require in-person participation.
Compensation- Part-time, year-round salaried position
- Annual salary: $20,000
- Weddings, funerals, memorials, and other services outside the regular scope of the position are compensated separately
