Special Education Teacher
Plan and provide specialized instruction to students with individualized education programs (IEPs) to help them progress in the general education curriculum. Accept full responsibility as the case manager for students with IEPs and oversee their compliance.
Primary qualifications include:
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsement in at least one area of special education; SM, SE, or SV preferred
- Experience in working with students with disabilities
- Experience in supporting core content and providing accommodations
- Knowledge of positive behavior interventions and supports
- Competency in the administration and interpretation of academic ability and achievement assessments
- Skills and abilities
to develop and promote positive relationships with students, parents, and staff - Ability to cooperatively participate in Child Study Teams, evaluations, and IEPs
- Knowledge of all areas of eligibility and ability to work effectively with students in all areas of eligibility
Position responsibilities include:
- Determine instructional needs of students based on assessment data and district curriculum
- Provide direct and/or supplemental instruction to students
- Participate in and support functional behavior assessments, the development behavior intervention plans, and the implementation of positive behavior interventions and supports
- Use technology to enhance instruction and increase student independence
- Knowledge of accommodations and modifications, as they relate to the general education curriculum
- Develop and facilitate timely Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings
- Maintain service logs and documentation of student progress and communicate regularly with students and parents
- Develop and provide academic instruction, behavioral supports, remediation, and guided practice using instructional objectives and lessons
- Create and maintain a schedule of service and manage working in multiple buildings
- Collaborate with general education staff to promote students with IEPs achieving IEP goals and meeting curriculum expectations
- Model professional and ethical standards when working with all stakeholders
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with parents, staff, other school district personnel, and community services agencies
- Maintain effective and timely written and oral communication with parents, staff, and other professionals
- Participate in staff meetings, in-service activities, staff development/special programs, school improvement teams and planning committees as appropriate to the assignment
- Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits
- Other duties as assigned
Physical demands include:
- Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout school and classroom
- Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time
- Must be able to assist students who have physical difficulties
- Occasional bending, kneeling, sitting, standing, and climbing stairs
- Prolonged periods sitting and working on the computer to complete necessary paperwork
Compensation:
Salary is based on the GPEA CBA, which may or may not recognize previous professional teaching experience. GPEA Members are also eligible for a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including health/dental/vision/life and long-term disability insurance. Membership in the Michigan Public Schools Employee Retirement System.
