Special Education Teacher, Special Needs / Learning Disabilities
Position Description
Provide special education student(s) with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth. Responsible for planning instruction and adaptation of the general/special education curriculum to accommodate students in the learning process. Function as the case manager for students with individualized education programs (IEPs) and oversee their compliance.
Primary Qualifications- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
- SV endorsement preferred
- Must have current MI SpEd endorsement (any) and be willing to obtain SV endorsement if hired
- Significant experience
- Extensive knowledge of developmental milestones
- Related academic endorsements preferred
- Ability to implement and instruct established Grosse Pointe Curriculum
- Includes culturally diverse themes in lessons and instruction, including historical or other information as to cultures having significant impact on the world, nation or community.
- Ability to integrate technology with instruction.
- Implements instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.
- Identifies, selects, and modifies instructional resources to meet the needs of the student(s) with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
- Assists in assessing changing curricular needs and offers plans for improvement.
- Maintains effective and efficient record keeping procedures.
- Provides a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.
- Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with student(s), parents, and other professionals on a regular basis.
- Collaborates with peers to enhance the instructional environment.
- Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with student(s), parents, peers, and community.
- Ensures that student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with student(s), parents, and schools.
- Assumes responsibility for meeting his/her course and school-wide student performance goals.
- Demonstrates gains in student(s) performance.
- Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as: meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating.
- Quality assessment skills.
- Crisis Prevention training preferred.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor.
- Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout school and classroom.
- Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time.
- Must be able to assist students who have physical difficulties.
- Occasional bending, kneeling, sitting, standing, and climbing stairs.
- Prolonged periods sitting and working on the computer to complete necessary paperwork.
Salary is based on the GPEA CBA, which may or may not recognize previous professional teaching experience.
