Project Accountant

Groton Utilities is seeking a meticulous and community-minded Project Accountant to manage the financial lifecycle of our critical infrastructure projects. Operating within the City of Groton, this role offers a stable, high-impact career in local government where your financial insights directly support utility operations and public services. Working under the general supervision of the Controller, you will ensure our major projects remain on budget, optimize our work order tracking, and uphold rigorous accounting standards.

You Will Do
  • Budgeting & Forecasting:
    Assist in preparing the annual capital budget, analyze financial performance throughout the project lifecycle, and ensure spending aligns with approved limits.
  • Work Order Management:
    Oversee the internal work order system, assisting with project initiation, tracking data entry accuracy, and ensuring clean project closeouts.
  • Billing & Collections:
    Generate Accounts Receivable (AR) billings, prepare monthly AR reconciliations, and coordinate directly with insurance agencies and police for motor vehicle accident billings.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:

    Partner with project managers and the finance team to provide actionable financial insights, assist with vendor contracts, and train new hires on the work order system.
  • Community Incident Response:
    Play an integral role in our community's safety by serving in an assigned emergency response role during City or Utilities incident activations.
What You Bring (Qualifications & Education)
  • Education:

    A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, or a closely related field.
  • Experience:

    2 to 5 years of proven experience in project accounting or a related financial role.
  • Technical

    Skills:

    Proficiency in accounting software, financial reporting tools, and the Microsoft Office Suite. Prior experience with work order management software is highly preferred.
  • Analytical Abilities:
    Strong numerical capabilities with a talent for managing complex data sets and conducting variance analyses.
  • Communication:
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of translating complex financial data for non-financial team members.
  • Professionalism: A self-starter mentality with the ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and remain calm under pressure.
  • Requirements:
    Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license for safe vehicle operation.
